    1. LIVING THINGS and THEIR PARTS GPS Unit 2 Biochemistry Characteristics of Life, Cell Theory, and Cells

    2. How can I tell if something is living? Living things share certain traits There are 8 key characteristics that all living things must have.

    3. Features of Living Things 1. All living things reproduce --REPRODUCE ? to form offspring similar to the parent --Ways to reproduce: 1. asexual—only 1 parent needed 2. sexual—2 parents are needed

    4. Features of Living Things 2. All living things grow Grow ? to change in size 3. All living things develop Develop ? changes that occur as a living thing grows develops into a tadpole frog

    5. Features of Living Things 4. All living things need food a. consumers—eat other living things b. producers—make their own food 5. All living things use ENERGY --ENERGY—the ability to do work --CELLULAR RESPIRATION—the process in which food is broken down and turned into energy

    6. Features of Living Things 6. All living things are made of CELLS --CELLS—the basic unit of all living things --Types of Cells: 1. prokaryotic—no nucleus, unicellular 2. eukaryotic—has a nucleus & organelles, multicellular animal cell plant cell

    7. Features of Living Things 7. All living things aim for HOMEOSTASIS --HOMEOSTASIS ? your body changes to the environment to keep it in balance --example: • when you are hot, you sweat • when you are cold, you shiver

    8. Features of Living Things 8. All living things adapt to their environment --ADAPTATION ? a trait that makes a living thing better able to survive --example: • a polar bear having white fur • a duck having webbed feet

    9. CELLS Stem cells blood cells animal cell plant cells How were cells discovered?

    10. CELLS Cells were discovered because of MICROSCOPES! 1. Compound Microscope 2. Electron Microscope 3. Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) 4. Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM)

    11. MICROSCOPES A microscope is used to magnify and object by a large amount compound microscope electron microscope

    12. WHO DISCOVERED THE CELL? Several scientists made discoveries: 1. Robert Hooke—named the cell 2. Mathias Schledien—observed all plants were made of cells 3. Theodore Schwain—observed all animals were made of cells

    13. CELL THEORY 1. All living things are made of cells 2. All cells come from other cells 3. Cells are the basic units of living things

    14. CELL ORGANELLES Plant and animal cells have most of the same organelles but some differ Read pg. 32—37 and answer your concept map

    15. ANIMAL CELL

    16. PLANT CELL
