Planning a Grotto Cartography Class – Scope of the class • Teach survey classes separate from cartography class • Survey is different from cartography, and takes a different set of skills. Survey is better taught in the field in a one day course • Teach sketching courses as well as cartography • Like above Sketching is a different skill then cartography, although the two are very closely linked. In fact it is good to have sketchers take a Carto class, and cartographers to sketch so that each know what the other is doing Don’t try to cram too much into a single class, or even a series. Decide on what you plan to teach and tailor your plan to it

The truth is not everone will become cartographers or generate maps, but a lot of people will have fun trying, and you may get survey personel • Invite widely • Hit message board, websites and newsletters. Try other grottos. It is a great way to link groups and youo never know who may want to join in!
