Setting Up Camp Session 1
Session Goals • Establish a supportive math talk professional learning community • Connect proportional reasoning – to the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum • Recognize the developmental nature of multiplicative thinking (counting to skip counting to additive thinking in primary grades) as it applies to junior students
Create a name tag (glyph) • You have an index card and a sheet of paper. On the back of your index card is one of the following words: rate, ratio, percent, fraction, multiplication, or proportion. • Complete the following steps on your index card. • Hold your card in landscape and fold it horizontally.
Before writing the name on the nametag do the following two things: • What is your position in the family? • Oldest – write your name in red • Youngest – write your name in green • Middle – write your name in black • Only Child – write your name in blue • Are you in your first five years of teaching? • Yes – write in cursive • No - write in manuscript
Draw the following symbol on your name tag to indicate the month in which you were born: • January – snowman July – maple leaf • February – heart August – sun • March – kite September – apple • April – umbrella October – pumpkin • May – flower November – poppy • June – school with a December – holly leaf
Think about these before putting the border on your name tag: • On which day of the month were you born? – Put that many dots in the border of your name tag • How many siblings do you have? – Color a line around the edge of your border as follows: 0 – green 1 - blue2 – purple 3 – yellow4+ - red
Complete your glyph card • “Math is like a ________________.” • Sketch a picture of your choice of animal that completes the sentence.
Publish your glyph • Replicate your glyph on your sheet of paper and post it! Retain your index card for future reference.
Norms • Fearless speaking and listening • Always assume a positive intention • Bring your burning issues to the camp fire • Suffering is optional
Big Ideas • Camp Flags • Building Our Landscape • Read a matching question and discuss how it is associated with the Big Idea • Hang the question under the Big Idea • Explain to the group your thinking
Glyph Group Problem Solving • On a typical May 24th weekend Joyce noticed both her arms were covered in black fly bites. Cathy said “I think I have twice as many as you do.” How many black fly bites might Cathy or Joyce have? • How do you know?
Gallery Walk • What Big Ideas for Number do you see represented in the solution? • Use a marker to put the number on the bottom of the solution
