Schedule Status Recent developments have caused a slip in the PFP delivery to LM from 11/13 to 11/26 LPW thermal vac anomaly led to an FRB decision to remove the LPW boards from the PFDPU for diagnostics SWEA failure led to an FRB decision to open the SWEA analyzer for inspection (requires IRAP participation) PFDPU reintegration and test is the critical path to delivery If SWEA falls behind further it can deliver later, but nothing can deliver without PFDPU
EVM (August report) SPI (and CPI) dropped a bit as we eat into the last of the pre-ship schedule margin. CPI remains low due to high manpower levels required to overcome problems and press to maintain delivery schedule SPI / CPI August 2012

GSFC MAVEN MAG – Status MAG FM1 and FM2 performed as expected during PFP system environmental tests Elevated noise observed at times during the tests traced to grounding and other issues specific to non-flight like test configuration. Awaiting MAG test data exercising all PFP MAG-related functions for test and verification of PFP on board software. • Filter Box Schedule (filter box assembly delayed ~2-3 weeks by various contract issues). • Complete board receipt, inspection, checkout by 10/4/12. • Complete thermal tests of assemblies, ship to SAIC for coat and stake by 10/11/12; expect return of boards by 10/19/12. • Install boards in enclosure, checkout, complete by 10/24/12. • Thermal cycling, 200 hours burn-in to be completed by 11/02/12.. . • Schedule availability of filter boxes by 11/05/12.

SWEA Status SWEA was in thermal vacuum tests when it had a high voltage discharge that damaged a preamp Similar to a discharge we had in calibration which was blamed on a HV capacitor Also saw significant high voltage ripple (70Vp-p) On opening the instrument for diagnostics saw damage to diodes on the anode board Solder plating of leads flaking off, tiny flecks of solder on anode Concern that flecks could have gotten into analyzer Replaced diodes with surface mount parts Also found VMI HV multiplier on HV board was damaged Have not been able to remove multiplier for failure analysis – epoxied to PWB Added new multiplier, fixed ripple FRB decision to open analyzer to inspect for damage and contamination IRAP team coming to SSL to do the work next week

SWIA Progress • EMCPassed • Vibe Passed • T-Vac Passed • Final Calibration Completed • All SWIA Level 3 Requirements Met (Or Exceeded) • ATLO/Transition Scripts, LUTs, and RTSs delivered • Environmental Testing Nearly Complete: • Magnetics is the only environmental test remaining • ~235 hours of power-on time for full FM to date • ~100 w/ HV
SWIA Issues • Flight MLI thermal blanket may need to be slightly altered to accommodate all connectors on doghouse • Connectors come in from two directions • Hole in MLI blanket not quite big enough to accommodate • Plan to do test-fit with flight cable to determine best way to alter blankets • Radiator area may also need to be adjusted.

STATIC Accomplishments FM TDC board modified (PFR 120), tested in vacuum – works properly. FM aperture mechanism tested in vacuum – works properly. During re-testing of the STATIC FM sensor, after the TDC fix, a new source of noise was identified. This noise is different from the low level noise that initially generated PFR 119, and will be added to that PFR. The noise appears to be associated with small tears in the Start carbon foils resulting in field emissions ~100 nA, much larger than previous background emissions. Contact with the UNH Cluster/CODIF team identified similar problems that could develop after weeks of operation. Suppressing this emission requires adding a grid in front of the foil – similar to the suppression grid on the Stop foils. The grid and spacer were fabricated, grid electro-polished, and installed this week. Static went under vacuum by Oct. 5 and calibrations should start Oct. 8. FSW for generating all STATIC APIDs developed - in test. Ground software for decommutating STATIC APIDs developed - in test. Ground software for MLUT table generation completed - in test Ground software for RTS commands generation completed - in test.
STATIC Open Issues / Tasks Start carbon foil suppression grid needs testing to verify it eliminates field emission noise identified in earlier tests. STATIC needs to complete environmental tests after calibrations. STATIC APIDs and RTS commands generated by PFDPU need thorough testing on the EM and FM units. Colutron ion gun Wein filter repaired (broken internal wire) but gun is still having heat dissipation problems – can’t be run on hot days. Colutron gun needs testing with EM sensor before calibrations with the FM sensor. Spare units for subsystems (ACC/MCP, MCP-Anode, TOF analyzer) are waiting for a break in ME work load for assembly.

SEP Accomplishments Repair to SEP actuator assemblies was accomplished successfully 9/05 - SEP Pre-Vibe Magnetic Characterization (passed) 9/07 - SEP Vibration testing (passed) 9/10 - SEP post-Vibe Magnetic Characterization (passed) 9/12 - SEP Enters Thermal/Vac Chamber (This was done in parallel with PFDPU T/V) 9/25 - SEP Thermal/Vac Tests end. Removed from chamber (passed) Anomaly on opening of SEP2 Actuator at low bus voltage and lowest temperature. Visual inspection showed incomplete motion (~90%) Does not impact science. 9/27 - SEP Passes post-Thermal Vac Magnetic Characterization 10/05 – SEP begins final calibration with PFDPU 10/6 Preliminary cal done with SEP1 using FM#1 (Flight spare sensor)

PFDPU Flight System • Thermal Vacuum Testing (TVAC). • PFDPU TVAC Testing completed, 9/24.
PFDPU Flight System • MAG noise was attributed to the MAG Heater operation during its synchronization transitions (Not expected in flight). • Diagnostics were performed by simulating the heater temp sensor with a variable resistor to measure noise counts. • LPW -30C channel anomaly at 2MHz charge pump frequency (PFR124). Not a failure since we operate fine at 1MHz, but unexplained, implying a risk of future failure. • Thermal Vacuum Testing (TVAC). • All temperature cycles and CPTs complete. • SEP noise was identified as TVAC chamber/pump noise. • An external wire mesh was installed to enhance the grounding and decrease interference.
PFDPU Flight System • The flight PFDPU was removed from the SNOUT1 TVAC Chamber to support the PF instruments calibrations. • SWIA Calibration Support. • Completed, 10/1. • SEP Calibration Support. • In progress, 10/2 to 10/12. • Future Instrument Calibration Support. • EUV Temp. Calibration – week of 10/15. • LPW Boom Deploy – week of 10/15. • MAG Calibration – 10/20 to 10/24? • GSEOS. • Updated RTS’s and LUT’s verified and loaded into the flight PFDPU EEPROM.
PFDPU Flight System • MAG Filter Box (x2). • Build approved and awaiting completion and delivery from GSFC. • Thermal Cycling to be done at GSFC. • Vibration deferred to S/C Testing.

ABPL for all instruments are complete • Alert response reports (GIDEP) – Provided disposition and updated the alert response database - no impact reports for all 28 alert items for September 2012 alerts. • Polymerics – Updated mix record database. Performed polymeric witness sample testing, filing, inspections, and documentation.
