Bastille • It was 100ft tall and had a moat 80ft wide • It was built in 1370 as fortification to protect the walled city of Paris by Charles V. • Was first used as a state prison in the 17th century. • Richelieu was the first person to use it as a state prison.
Bastille Continued • Under Louis XIV was made into a judicial detention center, and was Governed by Marquis de Launay. • The yearly average of the prisoners was 40 people.
Bastille During Louis XVI • It was used a prison • It held political prisoners and criminals • The king could send people there without a trial • The Bastille was a symbol of the King’s arbitrary rule, and its capture would show the king’s weakness.
How the French viewed the Bastille • The citizen’s hated it when they lived in it(when it was a prison). • The higher status people in society thought it as better than a hospital or a bad hotel • Some were even chained to the walls and survived on bread and water.
