VERB STEM • The verb stem is the infinitive minus the -er (example: parler – er = parl)
Je - e Tu -es Il/Elle/On -e -er VERB ENDINGS (singular)
-er VERB ENDINGS (plural) • Nous -ons • Vous -ez • Ils/Elles -ent
-er VERB ENDINGS (all) • Je - e • Tu -es • Il/Elle/On -e • Nous -ons • Vous -ez • Ils/Elles -ent
Je parle Tuparles Il Elle parle On Parler – to speak (singular)
Parler – to speak (plural) • Nous parlons • Vousparlez • Ilsparlent • Elles
Parler – to speak (all forms) • Je parle • Tuparles • Il • Elle parle • On • Nous parlons • Vousparlez • Ilsparlent • Elles
PRONUNCIATION RULES • Here are the rules of pronunciation of –er verbs • The verbs that end with –e,-es, and –ent all have the SAME pronunciation. • parle = parles = parlent • REMEMBER the “ENT” is silENT
EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE • “-ger” verbs • Verbs such as “manger” and “nager” • Nous mangeons (We eat) • Nous nageons (We swim) The extra “e” is there for pronunciation.
More rules!! • “Je” changes to “ j’ “ before a verb that starts with a vowel sound • J’aime aller au cinéma. J’habite Olean. • J’écoute de la musique. • The “s” at the end of nous, vous, ils, and elles makes a “z” sound before verbs that start with a vowel sound. • Vous étudiez. (Voo zay tu dee ay) • Elles étudient. (Ell zay tu dee)
