  5. What conjugation? • the infinitive tells the conjugation to which a verb belongs • 1st Conj = are  portare = to carry • 2nd Conj = ēre vidēre = to see • 3rd Conj = ere  scribere = to write • 4th Conj = ire  audire = to hear

  6. What Linking Vowel? • the infinitive/conjugation tells the linking vowel required for present tense • 1st Conj = are  a • 2nd Conj = ēre e • 3rd Conj = ere  i • 4th Conj = ire  i

  7. How to conjugate: • chop off the infinitive ending, add the linking vowel, then add the personal endings. • The personal endings are:

  9. Special Rules: • O swallows linking vowel in 1st and 3rd conjugation. • Ex: conjugate laudare

  10. Special Rules: • -int becomes -unt in 3rd conjugation • -int becomes -iunt in 4thconjugation • Ex: conjugate audire
