  1. What Is A Retina Specialist? A retina specialist is a highly skilled and trained physician and surgeon that focuses on helping patients with retinal conditions to help preserve or improve their vision. These are medical doctors who specialise in ophthalmology and sub-specialise in diseases and surgeries associated with the vitreous gel of the ye and the retina. This is also sometimes known as vitreoretinal medicine. A retina surgeon is highly trained. They have completed medical school and gone through specialist training in ophthalmology and vitreoretinal training. Usually, they will go through four years of medical school and one year internship, followed by three years of ophthalmology residency and then a further two years in a retina – vitreous fellowship. The retina is a thin layer of light-sensitive nerve tissue located at the back of the eye. When light enters the eye, it passes through the iris and to the retina. This is where images are focused and converted to electrical impulses. The impulses travel through the optic nerve to the brain, which results in light. A retina specialist diagnoses retina diseases, using technical equipment and testing. They work at clinics and hospitals treating a variety of eye conditions in adults and children. Medical and surgical procedures used by the retina specialist are sophisticated and delicate, working on the inner tissue of the eye. A retina surgeon can treat a variety of eye conditions including those related to ageing, such as age- related macular degeneration and retinal detachment to eye cancer. They treat patients with severe eye trauma, including adults and children with hereditary eye disease. The common conditions treated by a retina surgeon include diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, macular puckers, age related macular degeneration and retinal detachment. When you visit a retina specialist, you can expect the appointment to be longer than a typical visit to your GP or optometrist. You will be asked to provide detailed information on your medical history, along with any medications you are taking.

  2. The retina specialist will dilate the eyes to take a close look at the back of the eye to identify any problems. They will carry out a number of tests and take images of the eye, tracking the progress of any conditions you may have. If necessary, you may receive treatments, which can include an eye injection. With your eyes being dilated, it will take a few hours before your sight returns to Norma. Ensure you have a family member or friend available to drive you home after the appointment. These specialists are medical doctors that have specialised in ophthalmology and a sub-speciality in the retina. They can provide medical and surgical treatment of all diseases associated with the back of the eye. Sometimes an eye problem will be identified during your routine eye exam at your local optician when being tested for new glasses or contact lenses. They will refer you to an ophthalmologist or retina specialist. The retina specialist can focus on the back of the eye and work with ophthalmologists, optometrists and other eye care providers. They treat eye diseases in the office and will perform surgery at eye clinics and hospitals. Retina specialists perform a host of surgical procedures including injections of diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. They perform laser treatments for retinal tears and detachments and vitrectomy surgery for eye floaters, retinal detachments, macular holes, epiretinal membrane, posterior vitreous detachment and intraocular bleeding.
