Introduction • This policy applies to all campuses, one elementary school and one high school. • All district employed library media specialists are to adhere to the policies concerning challenged materials and selection of materials that the district has approved.
Critique • Adoption date is unknown • Has not been revaluated in a number of years • Bill of Rights is written without further explanation • Policies are not lined out • Timelines are not provided in the challenge process • Information is not easily located
Mission: The school’s mission is to graduate students ready to thrive in a global economy and offer a diverse and multicultural learning experience and curriculum. This district promotes the belief that all students can learn, ensures students have the technology and resources necessary to succeed, actively involves the parents and community, regards each student as an individual with unique needs and aspirations, and successfully provides a safe and orderly school environment. The library media centers implement, enrich, and support the educational programs of the school. • Objective: The purpose of this policy is to adapt criteria for the selection, removal and replacement of library materials. • Responsibility for Selection: Responsibility is given to the School Board and a Professional Library Media Specialist
Criteria library materials will be chosen to meet a high standard of quality, be appropriate for age and emotional development of the student, and shall have aesthetic literary or social value. All forms, text, audio-visuals, periodicals, software, etc…will be considered on the basis of: Authority Scope Reliability Treatment Readability Subject Interest Format Special Features Potential Uses
Procedures • The library media specialist will select materials based on the existing collection and the needs of the school curriculum each school year. • The specialist will consult reputable, unbiased, professional selection aids when adding to the library’s collection. • The faculty will be consulted on the needs of their departments and grade levels. • Based on the same criteria as new materials gifts and non-book materials shall be evaluated and selected for the library’s collection. • Materials that are not current will be withdrawn from the collection. • Subscription materials will be examined before student use and will be selected based on the needs of the curriculum and student needs.
Procedures for Reconsideration of Materials: • Inform the complainant of the selection procedures • Request the complainant to submit a Request for Reconsideration • Inform the administration and other appropriate personnel • Keep challenged materials on the shelves during the reconsideration process • Upon receipt of the completed form, the principal requests a review of the challenged materials by the review committee. • The committee will meet and examine the material within a three week period.

Present written recommendation of the review committee to school board (both majority and minority opinions)5. The school board will retain or withdraw the challenged material 6. The decision will be sent in written form to the complainant.
