  2. The Existing Policy

  3. Review existing policy Compare to American Library Association (ALA) suggested guidelines (2006) Compare to well-written policies in other districts Select elements to add, delete, or change Rewrite existing policy Strategy for evaluation

  4. Policy Rewrite To assist me in my rewrite I used guidance from: • Access to Resources and Services in the School Library Media • Program • Intellectual Freedom • Library Bill of Rights • Workbook for Selection Policy Writing Photo: http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/index.cfm • Library Procedures Manuel Photo: http://www.georgetownisd.org/ • Indian Prairie Community School District: Policy and Procedure • Manuel Photo: http://ipsdweb.ipsd.org/ • Library Policy Manuel Photo: http://www.ryle.boone.k12.ky.us/

  5. Policy Rewrite continued Components of the rewrite: The policy was expanded from two pages to seven during the rewrite process.

  6. A clear, concise philosophy is needed to guide policy decisions. Specific policies are needed to provide guidance and clarity for all steps in the process. The outcome of a strong selection and reconsideration policy must always center on creating a library media center focused on student learning and achievement. Final Thoughts
