Selection and Reconsideration Policy Critique LIBM 6360 Darlene King Rickman/ 2011 Collection DevelopmentSummer II
Policy Critique/Missing Parts • Objective – Bill of Rights • Mission Statement • The policy was not available at the library it had to be emailed to me from the Regional office
Responsibility • The policy was VERY CLEAR!! Responsibility of selection lies with the Library Director and he/she reports to the Library Board • Director is to follow the selection policy set forth by the Board
Selection Criteria • Bulleted set of specific items to follow • Some were repetitive and I rewrote them together. • There was no mention of diverse culture or society – this was also written in
Technology Selection • Technology was alluded to and nothing mentioned about the internet • Rewritten to specify technology followed same selection policy
Gifts • This was the best section! • Evaluated with selection criteria • Considered condition, housing and access • ALL GIFTS become the property of the Library • Donor signs a DEED OF GIFT transferring ownership(just wasn’t attached) • Donor is notified upon removal of material and may elect to have it returned to them
Challenged Material • Went directly to a written complaint – form not provided • Rewritten: giving dates of Board Meetings, form attached, book stays on shelf • 1st step to be an informal meeting to discuss library selection policy, ALA-Bill of Rights and Freedom to read, to try to resolve the misunderstanding
Challenged Material Internet • I found a great statement on a sample policy that I used regarding the Internet • It stated that the materials found/used from the internet could not be challenged – the Internet Policy signed by internet users explained the vastness of the materials that could be access and that wasn’t controlled by library, even though there were cyber-nannies in place, some things just came through.
Pictures • All picture were taken from google images and were free • I just happen to like owls
