COMPARATIVE STATEMENT & ACHIEVEMENT OF THE STATE IN FOODGRAIN & OILSEED. • Strategy &Measures taken by State for achieving the same during2015-16 • Introduction of quality seeds (HY & HYV evolved by ICAR & SAU). • Area expansion under Boro Paddy. • Pulses cultivation as Rabi crop & Maize Intercropping with Soya bean. • Introduction of new technology, SRI and ICM. • Construction of harvesting structures improves crop production through assured availability of moisture.
New Innovations/Initiatives Adopted By The State 15-16 • Introduction of Quality seeds such as Shahsarang (evolved by ICAR NEH) in Mid altitude and MEGH I, MEGH II in high altitude and variety evolved by Titabor, Research Station, Assam, has contributed to the increase in production and productivity in Rice. • Cultivation of Field Pea as pulse crop in rotation after paddy harvest in the high altitude where Boro Paddy cannot be grown improves the Soil health and additional income to the farmers. • In flood prone areas where Sali Paddy cannot be grown. Pulses (Lentil, Black Gram, Green Gram) are grown followed by Boro Paddy enhance the production and productivity of Foodgrains. • Introduction of Zero tillage in Pulse cultivation helps to minimize the cost of cultivation of Lentil. • Introduction of SRI and ICM. • Net Fencing – Despite the problem of stray cattle faced by farmers in some areas, they have taken up the cultivation of Boro Paddy with the provision of net fencing as the production is two times higher than Sali Paddy and easier management of Pest and diseases.
Co- ordination with Line Department 2015-16: In collaboration with the Water Resources Department, non-functional command areas have been rejuvenated and efforts to be made to identify potential areas to be provided with irrigation facilities thus providing the area expansion under Boro paddy cultivation. Post Harvest Management 2015-16 : Storage facilities (Seed Godown) have been provided under Seed Village Programme in some Districts along with Metallic Bin containers for Household Storage of seeds. Hermetically sealed polythene bags are also being provided to the paddy registered growers for further multiplication of quality seeds (HYV) from the State scheme.

Shri ArbilikSiangshai,ofMusniang Village East Jaintia Hills own a land of 2.0 ha,where he grow local varieties with low production. With the introduction of NFSM,the farmers are satisfy with the yield he is getting .By growing paddy hybrid varieties i.e. ARIZE 6444,SPH-115,the production is more and satisfactorily .The farmers are not only go for normal transplanting of paddy but even adopt the SRI method and also applied lime in the paddy field, thereby increase the production of paddy. Smt Lana Pdein of Mukhaialong Village, East Jaintia Hills District own a land of 1.0 ha where she grow local varieties and the average yield is 1.0 -1.2 MT/Ha but with the introduction of NFSM,the farmers are now satisfy with the yield and she is getting more yield by growing hybrid varieties i.e. SPH-115,with an average yield of 6-7 Mt,the farmers are not only go for normal transplanting of paddy but even adopt the SRI method thereby increase the production of paddy.
Smt. Dembina Sangma is a farmer of Rongjeng Reserve having 0.5 ha of land. She used to cultivate the local variety of paddy and the yield is low ( (2 mt/ha). But when she cultivate Hybrid Paddy Arize 6444 Gold under NFSM 2015-16 the yield in her field increase to 3.5 mt / ha. Now she is doing double cropping with the same variety in her field. Smt. Jullina Momin of Darugre Reserve bearing 0.75 ha of land. Before she use to cultivate the local variety where the yield is low (i.e 2 mt/ ha) but with the introducing of HYV Paddy seed (Variety Swarna Sub-1) under NFSM 2015-16 the production increase to 3 mt/ ha.
AyobHussain is a resident of Phershakandi village under Selsella C n RD Block, West Garo Hills. Like most of his village folks, AyobHussain is solely dependent on his agricultutral field where he cultivates Boro Paddy, lentil, mustard etc. In the year 2015, the Department of Agriculture, West Garo Hills distributed the rice variety “MahaGomti” under National Food Security Mission (NFSM) Scheme for Boro Paddy cultivation. The rice variety was also given to AyobHussain and was advised by the agriculture department to take up SRI (System of Rice Intensification) and Line Sowing. At the time of harvesting, he was pleased to notice that he had got more yield as compared to previous years when he had practiced the conventional method of rice cultivation. AyobHussain has also decided to take up new and improved technologies of cultivation as and when suggested by the Department of Agriculture. Phershakandi is a village under Selsella C n RD Block and is located 65 kms away from Tura, West Garo Hills. Most the community residing in Phershakandi depend solely on their agricultural fields and they cultivate paddy, jute, lentil and seasonal vegetables. AjiborRahman is one such progressive farmer who is fervent in learning new and improved technologies for getting better yield production from his agricultural fields. In the year 2015, the Department of Agriculture, West Garo Hills distributed the rice variety “Arize Tej Gold” under National Food Security Mission (NFSM) Scheme for Boro Paddy cultivation and AjiborRahman was one of the beneficiaries among others. AjiborRahman went for SRI (System of Rice Intensification) as suggested by the officials of the agricultural department and in due time, he was contented with his efforts and the suggestions from the department. He also got more yield compared to other farmers in his village who had taken up the conventional method of rice cultivation. As such, AjiborRahman have set an example and the other farmers have been motivated in taking up the modern methods of paddy cultivation.
Smti. Angela Shanghoi a progressive farmer of West Khasi Hills was the awardee of the Krishi Karman Award 2014-15. New innovation of growing pulse in high altitude after harvesting paddy was adopted by her, improved the soil health and brought additional income to her family.
Shri Mohed Ali, like most people in the village of Haripur is solely dependent on Agriculture. He is the bread winner of his family and looks after them by selling off the extra yield he gets from his agricultural field in the nearby local markets. He grows lentil on an area of 0.5 Ha. The lentil variety grown by is HUL-57 which was given by the Department of Agriculture. The date of sowing was 23rd November 2015 while the date of harvest was on 16th March 2016. From his 0.5 Ha of lentil field he got a yield of 3.75 quintals. The excess yield is sold in the local markets earning him a profit of Rs 25,000 to Rs 26000 enabling him to lift the socio economic condition of his family. He has also set an example to the other farmers of his area as more and more farmers have decided to take up lentil cultivation in the next season.
Shri Adorso T. Sangma is an inhabitant of Singwilgre and like the rest of the locals of the area, he depends on his agricultural land for his sustainability. Earlier he was unaware of the new methods of cultivation but with the help of the Agriculture Department, he is now fully equipped with the knowledge on line sowing and SRI methods of rice cultivation. He is in a position to raise crops without interruptions due to his individual efforts and support from the Government. Shri Adorso T. Sangma has 2.5 Ha of agricultural land in which he uses 1 Ha of the land for cultivating maize crop by following the scientific method of maize cultivation. The yield he obtained from maize cultivation is 25 Qtls/Ha. With the increase in production, the income of Shri Adorso T. Sangma has also increased thus proving to be a success story.
I, Shri. Grethilson Sangma farmer of RongrengBaiza Village was having 1 Ha of land and cultivating local variety of Maize where the production was very low (1 – 1.5) MT/Ha) but with the introduction of hybrid variety (HQPM-1) under NFSM for the year 2015-16 there was an increase in production i.e., 2.5 – 3 MT/Ha and I am still continuing the cultivation of maize besides vegetable cultivation. The Maize [HQPM-1] Demonstration has been taken up at SongsakAgalgre under NFSM, 2015-16. The Programme has been taken up in the month of May, 2016 and harvested in the month of August, 2016. The area coverage under this demonstration was 0.2 ha. and the total production under this very Demonstration was 4.0 qtls. The Yield came to 20.0 Qtls. Per ha.
