The Standard and Element SS6H6 – The student will analyze the impact of European exploration and colonization on various world regions. (a) Identify the causes of European exploration and colonization; include religion, natural resources, a market for goods, and the contributions of Prince Henry the Navigator.

Background Information • Where? … (to lands far away) • When? 1400s (1415) • Why? Wealth (goods, slaves, religion) • What? Silks, spices, sugar cane, slaves… • Who? Prince Henry – son of a king; helped capture Ceuta (N. Africa)

G o l d • In the 1400s, European countries were competing with each other for Natural Resources for wealth; Goal: Maximize profit • They competed for natural resources such as gold, silk, and spices • Spices were especially valuable • Many of these things could be found in India & China • Traders had to travel great distances over land to get these natural resources
Gold & Natural Resources • Transporting goods across these great distances was costly. • Everyone along the way had to be paid and wanted to earn a profit • By the time the spices and goods reached Europe, goods/spices had to be sold at extremely high prices.
Gold & Natural Resources • European Merchants knew that if they would trade directly with people in Asia, they could make enormous profits. • In the 1400s, Europeans began searching for a sea route to Asia.
God • Some Europeans believed it was their duty to spread the Christian faith throughout the world. • They felt that they could convert the Native people they met in their journeys into Christians.
G l o r y • As Europeans began exploring the Coast of Africa, they began settling Colonies. • Colonizing new areas added to a country’s territory (more natural resources, more wealth) • Colonizing also opened new markets • European countries could sell things to the people in these areas and make even more money
G l o r y • The more colonies a country had, the more wealth it had • More colonies meant more prestige or Glory • Countries began competing with one another for colonies • When one Country takes over another it is called Imperialism
Prince Henry the Navigator • Began the Age of European exploration • Hired sailors who explored the coast of Africa; • Opened the way for future journeys • Wanted to establish colonies • Interrupt money flow of Muslims (trade routes) • Created sugar cane (profitable crop) plantation (b/c no $$$ in trading gold) • Discovered island of Madeira • Crops produced increased labor • Led to the need for slaves • Other nations were copy cats
Prince Henry the Navigator • Opened a school of Navigation in Portugal • Collaboration: shipbuilders, cartographers (mapmakers), sea captains, and inventors to learn & work together.
His Presence is Known… • For the next 200 years, Europe’s largest countries began exploring Africa, Asia, and North America. • They set up Colonies, new markets, and spread Christianity.
OUTCOMES OR RESULTS • Portugal served as an outpost to explore Africa • Prince Henry became the governor of Portugal • Sent more than 50 expeditions to Africa • Led to the establishment and expansion of the Slave Trade • Portuguese permitted to travel to Spice Islands • Opened trade routes to China & Japan
