  4. TRANSPORTATION Please be sure that you have arranged transportation for your baggage, including instrument and suitcase, and yourself to the airport. If you are a Houston-area traveler, your Host Family will bring you to the airport. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA

  5. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • BAGGAGE LIMITATIONS • Each student is limited to ONE carry-on item and a personal item. Small instruments such as violins or flutes will be the carry-on items for those instrumentalists. VIOLISTS: You ALL play the VIOLIN. • Each student is limited to ONE suitcase or duffel bag. This bag will not exceed 44 lbs. Failure to do so may incur additional charges from the airline.

  6. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • BAGGAGE LIMITATIONS • ALL luggage must be tagged or labeled. DO NOT USE THE AIRLINE-PROVIDED PAPER TAGS. The MCI white plastic tags are for your suitcase and instrument. Use another (plastic) tag for your carry-on item. It’s smart to place your info inside the case as well, in case your tag is ripped off. • Place a copy NL5 of your itinerary inside your suitcase.

  7. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • What to Bring • Clothing, including concert attire (see next few slides) • Sundries (i.e. shampoo, soap) • Instrument and accoutrements • Cameras and batteries • Spending money • Wire music stand • Medications (in carry-on luggage)/glasses • Group Travel mentality • Journal, books, or other personal entertainment devices • Copies of passport, ATM/credit card, health insurance information (kept in separate place)

  8. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • What To Wear • A good pair of sturdy walking shoes are your most important accessory. Breaking in your super-cute shoes will be a mistake. • Obvious “American logos” will call attention to you. • We will visit cathedrals and churches. It is appropriate for visitors to cover their shoulders and avoid wearing shorts. • Concert Attire • Short sleeved shirts or blouses, pants or knee-length (or longer) skirts, nicer shoes…ALL BLACK! • We will have one outdoor concert. Plan your concert attire accordingly.

  9. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • What Not to Bring • Irreplaceable Items and Valuables • US contraband items • Bulky, heavy items. YOU ARE CARTING ALL OF YOUR OWN LUGGAGE. • > 44 lbs!

Both departure and return tickets distributed here First passport check Check in via Group Check-In You can eat lunch before you come or bring snacks/money to eat in the terminal. 22. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • FREEBIES! • Lanyard/name tag that you will keep on your person throughout the duration of the trip • MCI backpack for your use • 2 t-shirts: • Wear GREY t-shirt at airport on first travel day • Wear BLUE t-shirt at airport on final travel day • Following Trip, DVD of the photos taken on trip

  23. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • TRAVEL GROUPS (THE PODS) • All students will be assigned a parent to travel with. These parents are official chaperones of the trip. At the airport, we will be passing through checkpoints in these groups. • You received a copy of this list. Pay attention and make sure all students/chaperones in your group are present at check-ins. • Parent Chaperones: job is to take roll of your (small) group, report illnesses, disseminate information. At airport : follow instructions carefully from Tour Directors, and go through Checkpoints as directed.

  24. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • MEDICATION/HEALTH • Students are allowed to bring prescribed and OTC medications and self-medicate themselves. Parents, please police exactly which medications are being brought on the trip. • While on the trip, if students are ill, they must report their illness to their chaperone. DON’T BE A MARTYR. • Students should eat all meals to keep healthy. • Sleep on plane to try and acclimate to new time zone • Avoid sugary drinks and drink a lot of water to keep hydrated. • SLEEP!!

  25. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • TRIP EXPECTATIONS • Safety and Security • Stay in Groups of 4 or more AT ALL TIMES. Keep track of your travel buddies/roommates. • Keep valuables (i.e. passport, money) near your body as possible • BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS (especially in Prague) • If you see trouble, LEAVE. • Wear appropriate apparel. Ladies: be smart in in your attire; revealing attire will attract unwanted gestures and comments. European men are more aggressive than American men.

  26. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • TRIP EXPECTATIONS - “Open Your Eyes” • “Travel Mentality” • BE ON TIME! Our itinerary will fluctuate without notice. • Insure that you have your money, passport, and tickets with you. We will have checks DAILY. • Blend in. Excessive noise demonstrates immaturity and screams “Tourist.” • Pay attention to instructions from your Tour Directors and Chaperones. Failure to do so may make you spend more time with your Tour Directors. • Be flexible. The ability to change is the essence of maturity. • Respect your peers, chaperones, TYO Staff.  Avoid gossip and negative remarks. Look for the silver lining. Don’t burn bridges on this trip: we are all family. • Clean up after yourselves; better yet, don’t make a mess at all.

  27. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • LOAD CREW • Crew Managers: Gabe Louis, Matthew Kerkstra • JOB: Unload/load suitcases and instruments from bus. They do NOT cart luggage for you!

  28. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • SECTION MANAGERS • Insures that the section is set up correctly including extra stands for soloists.

  29. TEXAS YOUTH ORCHESTRA • HELP WANTED: • Adult volunteers to check an additional flight case for all of our equipment.
