Spanish American War & America imperialism • The U.S. first attacked the Philippines (another Spanish possession) • Two-front or two-ocean war ( Pacific & Atlantic ) • War lasted 4 months • U.S. gained the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico from Spain • U.S. Set up a military base in Guantanamo Bay Cuba and got involved in Cuban Affairs

21. Spanish American War & America imperialism • 1904 Roosevelt Corollary (added to Monroe Doctrine) • Declared that the U.S.A was an international police power in the Western Hemisphere. And that Non Western Hemisphere Countries were to stay out of the Western Hemisphere! • Great White Fleet – U.S. Navy toured the world to show the world that the U.S.A. was not playing around and that it would ENFORCE the Roosevelt Corollary! • Roosevelt said it took too long for the Navy to travel around the tip of South America to get to the Pacific Ocean from the East Coast. A SHORTCUT WAS NEEDED!

Spanish American War & America imperialism • 1903 – U.S. helped Panamanians rebel against Columbia - In exchange for the right to build a Canal • Panama Canal opened in 1914 and greatly shortened the route from the Atlantic to the Pacific. • The US intervening in Latin American affairs led to economic imperialism that established AMERICAN supremacy in the Western Hemisphere!
