  3. Food processing residue: • green fruit, • over-ripe fruit, • bruised, fruit, • leaves and twigs, • pulp from juice

  4. Signature recycled 9,400 tons of food processing residue in 2003 Countywide, food processors recycled 300,000 tons of residue

  5. Program to monitor and control the use of FPR is administered by Stanislaus County Food processing residue has a beneficial use; it is not “waste”

  6. 2003 Dos Rios applied nitrogen as residue at a rate of 24 lb/acre; TVG’s permit, WDR 97-140, allowed nitrogen application limit of 382 lb/acre

  7. Landfill as an alternative to soil amendment: • cost to SFC is $240,000 per year; • not environmentally friendly

  8. Stanislaus County and industry work together for a win/win solution

  9. The County has a well designed program to protect the environment; monitor and control the application of FPR as soil amendment; validate the effectiveness of the program

  10. Stanislaus County’s program is an excellent model for other counties
