Developing Oral Language • Form small groups • Brainstorm a list of words with any of the suffixes that appear in Lines 1-3 • For each one, students must find one root word that has spelling changes as a result of adding the suffix, or one root word that does not have spelling changes. • Share their lists with the class.

That student might then choose another student and challenge him or her to come up with an antonym for that word that does not appear on Line 1-3, and so on, until someone cannot come up with another antonym.

GrammarFact and Opinion • A fact is based on something that ca n be proved. • An opinion is a personal viewpoint that might not be factual. • It is important to distinguish fact from opinion to make judgments about issues and events. The media use fact and opinion when reporting information, but sometimes they present opinion as though it were fact. • Guided Practice: Discuss the consequences of mistaking opinion for fact. Share examples of where and why the media might present opinion as fact. Find facts and opinions from the story and share what they found with a partner, do not say whether you believe it is fact or opinion. Have the partner decide which one it is.
