SEVEN BASIC LEADERSHIP STYLES john m. dettoni, ph.d.
I. MANAGEMENT LEADER -- Four functions of a “leader” 1. To Plan: • Leaders lead and manage by planning. They do the following: • --determine present and future needs, • --establish objectives, • --assign priorities, • --determine procedures and processes to do work and to supervise.
2. To Organize • Leaders lead and manage by organizing. They do the following: • --determine the structure of an organization, • --delegate work to others, • --establish and maintain relations between parts.
3. To Lead • Leaders lead and manage by “leading.” They do the following: • --make decisions for others, • --motivate others to follow and do the work of the organization, • --control communication between individuals and between groups, • --select people to become involved with the leader and trains those people.
4. To Control • Leaders lead and manage by controlling. They do the following: • --establish performance standards, • --measure performance, • --evaluate the measurements taken, • --provide feedback on performance.
Leaders lead by letting people do their own thing. They do the following: • --give little or no direction, • --give people free reign to do whatever they are called to do, • --not being responsible for vision or direction, • --not being responsible to gather resources, • --not responsible to give help to others.
III. AUTHORITARIAN, MILITARY, PYRAMID LEADER: Boss, Chief, King, Queen
Leaders lead from an authority position. They do the following: • --top-down flow of authority, • --decisions are made at or near the top, • --decisions from the top people are expected to be followed by the followers, i.e., those below the decision makers, • --those at the bottom follow the orders of those on the top, • --lower persons have less or no input into decisions.
IV. AUTOCRATIC, DICTATORIAL LEADER = Dictator THE One and only Chief the “Voice of God on Earth!”
Dictatorship: • president, rector, professor, pastor or chairperson of an official board • issues edicts and decrees • demands absolute obedience • No one has authority, power or responsibility to question the • leader or his/her decrees • No one has the authority to do anything other • than what the “leader” has decreed and commanded • Power resides in one person situated at the top
All others are below him or her • Absolute power focused in one person • Top-down flow of authority • Those at the bottom follow orders from those higher up. • Lower person has little opportunity to give input regarding • decisions and in the decision-making process • Decisions are made at the top; everyone follows the decisions of the dictator - or else! • Chain of command – everyone has his or her place and job • in that chain - and all know their place and stay there and follow the dictator
V. EGO-CENTRIC LEADER • Leaders lead from an autocratic position. They do the following: • --demand absolute obedience, • --issue edicts, decrees, commands, • --power resides basically in one person at the top, • --all others are below the top person, • --absolute power and decision making, and authority are focused on this one person.
Leaders lead by being democratic. They do the following: • --hold continuous debate over values, goals, priorities, policies and programs, • --influence the debate, • --ask for vote on issues, • --take up the majority cause, • --be careful not to alienate totally the minority who lost; they might become the majority in a few years.
FUNCTION: A leader is one who helps other people to grow, develop, and mature. People are more important than production. Tasks are secondary to the development of the persons. • PURPOSE: In order to help people to identify, develop, and exercise their God-given gifts, talents, and natural abilities. • OUTCOME: So that the people can be fully human in their various venues of society. • A leader is, therefore, a shepherd-servant who ministers to, for, and with others. • Business leaders, politicians, clergy, parents, etc. are called to be this kind of leader.
