  15. The Problem with Periodicals Murphy Library Periodicals Collection 1999-2003 Jenifer Holman Acquisitions Librarian

  16. The Problem - Inflation

  17. Statistics in Context • Between 1986 and 2001: • journal prices overall increased by 8.5%/year • The CPI overall grew by 3.4%/year • Journal prices grew twice as fast as health care prices during the same period.

  18. Cancellation Philosophy • The title has gotten little or no recorded use over several years. • The title is available electronically through our subscription to Project Muse. • The title has a current cost/use ratio greater than $35. • The title no longer supports the curriculum.

  19. Periodicals ~ Budget

  20. Bottom Line • Even with small budget increases, Murphy Library (as well as most academic libraries) is no longer able to support traditional print access to scholarly communication through journal subscriptions alone

  21. Where Do We Go From Here? • Before publishing in a journal, ask some questions: • Can I post a copy of my article on my web site or my institution’s web site? • Are archives available to the public for free after a short time period (for publicly funded research) ?

  22. Contract Terms to Look For:

  23. More Terms to Watch For…
