Symbolism in Writing • Symbolism is used to provide meaning to the writing beyond what is actually being described • Plot and action are one level in the story; symbolism is another level
Why Create Symbols? Why don’t writers don’t just come right out and say what they mean? • Symbols allow writers to suggest layers and layers of meaning-possibilities that a simple, literal statement could never convey. • A symbol is like a pebble cast into a pond: It sends out ever widening ripples of meaning.

Symbols in The Outsiders • With your assigned symbols, you must do the following: • Draw the symbols. • Find a quote from the book that mentions the symbol. (It must be at least one sentence.) • Explain what the symbol means, based on the information stated in the text.
Make Your Own Symbols • On your own paper, make a list of three symbols that are not in the book but would make great symbols if included. • Be sure to describe the symbol clearly and state what the symbol would mean in the text.
