Substation Business Applications using CIM / PI AF by Stephen Diebold Manager – Real Time Systems Kansas City Power & Light
Agenda • Overview of KCP&L • CIM / PI AF Project • A Convergence of Opportunities • Main Goal • Situation Without Project • Closing the Loop • Asset-Related Applications • Applications • Interoperability Test • Project Status • Questions
Over 810,000 customers • Peak in excess of 5,660 MW • Service territory across 47 counties in MO and KS covering 17,934 sq. miles • Over 3,170 employees • 30 office/service center locations • 9 generation plant sites and 10 peaking facilities • 3,309 miles transmission lines • 24,466 miles of overhead distribution lines • 3,400 miles of underground distribution lines • 322 substations
A Convergence of Opportunities EMScomes with PI Historian Stores history of EMS real-time point data PI features for model-based access to tags Utilizes standards-based CIM model for EMS database configuration CIM/PI AF Project
Main Goal Transmission Engineering Interest in moving from Event-based maintenance to Condition-Based Maintenance CIM/PI AF Project
EMS gathering 50,000+ points of real-time data • CIM database where equipment and associated real-time data points defined for EMS PI Server AF • Point data history stored in PI tags, but accessible only by point name . • PI product (AF) able to model equipment’s relationships to tags, but product not currently used . CIM DE Environment EMS field devices . . CIM/PI AF ProjectSituation Without Project
Create infrastructure for generalized retrieval of historic real-time information on equipment basis (by reference to equipment location in system) on asset basis no matter where asset has been moved in system Generalized retrieval is essential to the creation of applications . . CIM/PI AF ProjectClosing the Loop • Export CIM model data to PI AF product • Create PI equipment / asset model for retrieving historic tag data PI Server AF . GDA (Utility Integration Bus) . Interoperability Test • Demonstrate interoperability between ABB, SISCO and OSISoft’s products based on the CIM and/or GDA. • Verify compliance with the CIM for those CIM classes/attributes involved in the information exchanges. • Demonstrate the exchange of power system models using the CIM and an RDF schema and XML representation of the model data. • Demonstrate exchange between ABB and SISCO products using the services defined in the GDA Client and Server interface standard.
Project Status • FAT completed June 4, 2010 • Interoperability tests completed • June 9, 2010 • SAT is being scheduled
