A Bit of History • Researchers estimate that there were 2,000 independent people speaking 350 languages across the North American Continent. • Local History: • Today there are no federally recognized tribes in Missouri. Most Native Americans were forced to leave during the Indian Removals of the 1800's.
A general overview • Key Beliefs • Nature – nurturing, powerful, generous, parental • God – “Great Spirit” – is within all people • Life is cyclical – we go through patterns; death gives life to others • Individuals each have an important role in society –contributions for the good of the group • Family connections important
Native American Literary Tradition • Oral Tradition • Stories, beliefs passed down by word of mouth from generation to generation • Beliefs, life lessons, values presented in the form of myths or legends • Since stories weren’t written, many oral traditions went undiscovered for years.
A Couple of Common Characters • Hero – Shows how to do what is right • Trickster– Shows the darker side of life/humanity, BUT there is a possibility for change • Often a raven or a spider
