The Great Slovak Smoke-Out Day, November 2002 Campaign objectives • Implementation of existing national laws of non-smokers, advocacy and ban on tobacco advertising at regional and local level • Creating of smoke-free zones in the public areas. • Preparation and presentation of the National Register of smoke-free companies and other working places. • Organizing of the media campaign, various events,volunteers and students activities. • Distribution of the leaflets, stickers and other materials within GSSO.
The Great Slovak Smoke-Out Day, November 2002 Strategic plan of the project • To involve as many as possible:Slovak towns and villages (20-30 % from a total of 2.719 communities), business enterprises, schools (30 % outof 4.400 schools)in the campaign. • To achieve the maximum participation of central and regional administration, politicians, NGO leaders and central and regional media. • To provide distribution of campaign materials. • To gain new partners and sponsors for the tobacco control. • To create: - 50 smoke-free streets, parks, squares - establish as many free smoking working places as possible. • To change the municipality legislation.
The Great Slovak Smoke-Out Day, November 2002 Time schedule of the project First stage of the project • Project information material and questionnaires addressed to: • Schools - 2.700 primary and 1.700 secondary schools • Municipalities of towns and villages - 2.700 letters • Business Firms - 1.000 the largest business enterprises • Regional Public Health Institutions and Hospitals - 200 letters • Central, Regional and Local media - 100 letters • Parliament Members and Ministers, National Institutions - 200 letters Project materials in total: 8.000 letters and 8.000 questionnaires
The Great Slovak Smoke-Out Day, November 2002 First stage of the project (Feedback) 2) The project enjoyed participation of: • 1.418 Schools - (30% of total number of schools in Slovak Republic) • 318 Towns and Villages - (all regional and district county councils - 30 % of Slovak population) • 36 Business Firms • 62 Public Health Institutions All these participants had sent the completed questionnaires back to Stop Smoking-NGO. The questionnaires were designed to approach tobacco issue in school environment, towns and business firms.
The Great Slovak Smoke-Out Day, November 2002 Second stage of the project • Socio-economic research on tobacco issue conducted by a professional advertising agency. This is the most representative research in Slovakia, consisting of 7 questions addressed to different socio groups: (by age, gender, education, financial income, domicile, etc.) 7 QUESTIONS in the research: -Do you smoke? -Does anyone smoke in your household? -Where does the cigarette smoke bother you the most? -Are you familiar with the Law for non-smokers protection which came into force in SR in 1997? -Do you agree with attitude that ban on smoking should be introduced in all restaurants and bars? -Do you think that smoke-free zones should be created also outdoors (for example in parks, playgrounds, sport stadiums...)? -To what level, do you think, the measures ensuring health regulation of environment, food and other products are necessary?

The Great Slovak Smoke-Out Day, November 2002 Third stage of the project Distribution of the campaign materials: • Campaign leaflets (200.000 pcs instead of 50.000 pcs originally planned) • Campaign stickers (100.000 pcs instead of 30.000 pcs originally planned) • Campaign posters (100.000 pcs instead of 3.000 pcs originally planned) • Free cards (20.000 pcs) • Slovak version of the WHO publication “Curbing the Epidemic” (1.000 copies) • Slovak version of the publication “Keep smiling. No one will die.” and a guideline for “International Labour Organization” on the smoke-free workplaces. • All the publications published on the website www.stopfajceniu.sk

The Great Slovak Smoke-Out Day, November 2002 Slovak Great Smoke-Out Day 2002(November 21st , 2002) • One day campaign • Under auspices of Minister of Health of the Slovak Republic • More than 2.000 different activities in towns, villages and at schools (sport competitions, cultural activities, discussions and meetings, visiting hospitals, ...) • More than 10.000 volunteers (mostly young people) • More than 100 various media presentations • The biggest campaign in tobacco control field in Slovakia

The Great Slovak Smoke-Out Day, November 2002 Project Achievements • Establishment of the Slovak National Coalition for Tobacco Control • Establishment of new tradition of Great Smoke-Out Day in Slovakia • Strong position at schools-for realization of the new oncoming projects • Stop Smoking-NGO has already started preparation of: • Slovak Great Smoke-Out Day 2003
The Great Slovak Smoke-Out Day, November 2002 What we did not achieve.... • Only very few business firms showed their interests to register in National register of smoke-free work places. • - More than 100 smoke-free places were temporarily created (town square, streets, parks and playgrounds). Only 2 of them remained permanent. • Lack of interest of local municipalities in implementation of national legislation on tobacco control. • Small interest from business firms to support tobacco control activities. • Result: We want to focus our attention on this issue in near future.
