The Russian Empire • Russia was the most populated and largest country in Europe. • Lagged behind in industry to rest of Europe. • Lacked warm water port. • Untapped resources. • Large number of nationalities and people inside borders. • Spoke many different languages. • Many did not like Russia.

  3. Domestic and Foreign Policy • Liberalism made little impact in Russia. • Czar ruled as a Autocrat. • Ruled with absolute power. • By the mid 1800’s, Liberalism started to influence Russia. • The Czar to counter liberalism began a program of Russification. • Forced non-Russians peoples in the empire to use Russian language, accept Orthodox religion, and to adopt Russian culture. • Russians tried to influence the Slavic people in the Balkans. Called Pan-Slavism. • Union of all Slavic people under Russian rule.

  4. Alexander II and Reform • Alexander tried to reform SERFDOM. • Obstructed industry. • Issued the Emancipation Edict. • Freed all serfs. • Peasants were free to buy own land, but many could not because, its was expensive. • Many moved to the cities.

  5. Radicals and Government Reactions • Several radical groups were in Russia. • Nihilists, were a group of middle and upper class intellectuals. • They believed in building a completely new Russia. • People’s Will, more violent group. • Used terrorism, used bombings and assassinations to force the government to grant its demands. • Killed Alexander II in 1881.

  6. Revolution of 1905 • In 1904 and 1905, Russia fought Japan. • Russia lost and lost land. • Its exposed a lot of the corruption and inefficiency of the governement. • January 22 1905, Bloody Sunday. • Russian troops shot unarmed Russian strikers. • Triggered the Revolution of 1905. • Czar issued the October Manifesto. • Called for individual liberties. • Called for the election of a parliament called the Duma. • Czar dismissed the Duma • Wanted the Czar to answer to it.
