ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Goals: Provide students with knowledge about President Lincoln. Students will understand the importance of some of the things Lincoln did. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will be able to discuss facts about President Lincoln and his decisions. Process/Skills: Students will be able to research topics and analyze readings. Values/Dispositions: Students will be able to express concerns on topics that affect the nation.
ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Rationale: This lesson is about President Abraham Lincoln. He was an important figure in American history and his actions have helped shape what America is today. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 16.A.2c Ask questions and seek answers by collecting and analyzing data from historic documents, images, and other literary and non-literary sources. 16.B.2d (US) Identify major political events and leaders within the United States historical eras since the adoption of the Constitution, including the westward expansion, Louisiana Purchase, Civil War, and 20th century wars as well as the roles of Thomas Jefferson. Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. National – NCSS Themes Time, Continuity, and Change People, Places, and Environment
Logical/Mathematical Teaching: Students will be taught how to work with percentages using the results from the 1860 popular vote. Activity: Students will look over the 1860 popular vote results and create a map with different colors showing which candidate won certain states. Students will then have to answer questions. Materials: Results from the 1860 popular vote, a blank map of America, crayons, coloring pencils, and printed out copies of the questions for each students. Verbal/Linguistic Teaching: Students will learn how to look for the important parts of speeches and how to connect with the audience. Activity: Each student will be given a copy of the Gettysburg address and have to analyze the speech. Musical/Rhythmic Teaching: Students will learn about poetry and learn how to write it. Activity: Students will read two of President Lincoln’s poems. The students will discuss the poems and then they will write their own poem about Lincoln based on the information they have learned. Visual/Spatial Teaching: Students will have a chance to evaluate two pictures and learn that photographs can say more than words. Activity: Students will compare two pictures, one of Lincoln at the beginning of being President and one of him shortly before he passed away. Students will then discuss if he looks very different. If so, what could have caused the change? Body/Kinesthetic Teaching: Students will learn how to give speeches/debate and evaluate what is a good speech/debate. Activity: The students will be assigned different speeches from the Lincoln Douglass debates. They will then act of their debate for the class. After the debates the class will discuss what happened and what points were made. Interpersonal Teaching: Students will learn how to read political cartoons. Activity: Students will be paired up and will discuss what they think their political cartoon means. After discussing, the pairs will then research information to help them understand it more and see if their thoughts are correct. Intrapersonal Teaching: Students will learn about a very important historical document. Activity: Students will read the Emancipation Proclamation. After reading the document students will write a response to it and research what other people thought about it. Naturalistic Teaching: Students will learn about Lincoln’s upbringing in the log cabin. They will also learn how different environments affect people. Activity: Students will examine Lincoln’s upbringing and analyze the affect it had on him compared to growing up in a different setting. Afterwards the class will discuss what they found and thought. At the end of the lesson there will be a Abraham Lincoln test on all of the different topics covered.
