Introduction • The Senator of the State dies • The State must find a new one • The Ranger Boys say pick Mr. Smith • Mr. Smith promises the people “ I’ll do nothing to disgrace the office of United States Senate.”
Rising Action • Senator Paine accuses Senator Smith of owning the very land on which he has proposed his boys’ camp • Clarissa finds Mr. Smith at the Lincoln Memorial and convinces him to fight . • In misleading newspaper stories , the press portrays Senator Smith as a stooge .
Climax • Senator Smith even brought food items and drinks because he knew that he was going to be awhile . • Senator Smith and Senator Paine were in a filibuster that lasted 22 hours . • Senator Smith was not leaving until he got he’s made his point that Senator Paine is guilty and not him .
Falling Action • Senator Smith says nothing at all in his defense during the committee hearings investigation his involvement with graft . • Senator Paine delivers baskets of telegrams from the people in his and Senator Smith’s state . The telegrams demand Smith give up the fight and leave the Senate . • After Jefferson Smith faints on the Senate floor , the page signals to Clarissa that he is okay .
Conclusion • Senator Paine bursts into the Senate Chambers crying, “Expel me! . . . Every word that boy said is true . . . Every word of it is true !
