Direct Leads Tell the reader or listener the most important aspect of the story right away. They are usually used with breaking news events.
Delayed Leads Entice the reader or listener into the story by hinting at its contents. They are usually used on features.
Who? Lead with who the story is about when the subject is prominent.
What? The most common element to start a lead. It immediately tells readers what happened.
When? Sometimes when something is happening is important. This doesn’t happen often since most news stories are written after the event.
Where? Although this story still starts with what happened, where it happened is a crucial part of the story.
Why? Why did the event occur? It’s not often you can work that into the lead, but it can be the most important aspect of a story.
How? Sometimes how something happens is the unique aspect of the story.
