3. Green Oaks Odds & Ends Safety- The back gate will no longer be open behind the MP Room. All students should leave school through the front of the school. Please do not cross the designated areas before the bell rings in the morning (7:55) or after school (2:30) unless you are signed in as a volunteer. Photography- Only designated parents will be photographers for various events. You may photograph your child but do not photograph others unless you have been asked to do so. Volunteering- All volunteers should sign-in at the office and wear a designated volunteer badge at all times. Please make sure to return the badge and sign-out when you leave. Dress Code- Familiarize yourself with the dress code in our Green Oaks Handbook with specific attention to length of shorts, tank top straps, shoes, earrings, and graphic/sayings on t-shirts.

4. Volunteer Sign-ups & November Conferences Take a moment tonight to sign up to help in class or for a special event. We especially need our Crosswalk Volunteers and Beaver Buck Volunteers. Sign-up for a November conference day and time. Fill out a reminder card and take that with you. I will send out a reminder in early November. 1

5. Student Rules & Procedures Students were given a fourth grade handbook on the first day of school and we discussed each item thoroughly. We will review these procedures each trimester. Important items to note: Bathroom policy Behavior Expectations Homework Policy 2

6. 3 • Homework Expectations • Homework is and essential part of our Fundamental Program. Without it, it would be impossible for students to master the standards and be prepared for 5th grade. • Homework is given Monday through Thursday and due the next day. • Students can expect 60-90 minutes of on-task time each night. • Each day student’s will write their assignments in their planner (binder reminder) and put it in their homework folder. • Each night, homework should be checked by a parent/guardian and the binder reminder should be signed by a parent/guardian. • Reading for a minimum of 30 minutes each night is also part of our daily homework.

7. Weekly Reading Log We are expecting a minimum of 30 minutes per night M-Th (2 hours per week). While we would like it initialed each day we realize some students read more on the weekends. We will be checking weekly to make sure students are keeping up but a HW will be issued if your child has less than 8 hours at the end of the month. We are continuing with our school-wide Reading Rocks program where students receive rewards based on the number of minutes/hours they read. You can find more information on the Green Oaks website.

8. Please remember to sign the binder reminder each evening.

9. Homework Expectations (Continued) Homework that is not turned in, late or incomplete will result in a Homework Notice. The HW Notice will need to be signed by a parent/guardian and returned the next day. If your child receives 10 Homework Notices in a trimester he/she will be placed on probation. Late work: Late work will be accepted and given full credit if turned in by Friday of the week it is assigned. This also applies for long-term projects. The Homework Notice will still be documented. Absent work: Students have as many days to make up work, as they were absent. If your child is sick, please call the office to request homework.

10. Behavior Expectations 4 Students will have one warning before they receive a memo. You will be notified on the weekly report of any memos throughout the week. However, if a behavior persists or is extreme you will be notified that day. My classroom management philosophy is such that I would rather focus on the positive than the negative. Our clip chart allows for students to move in both directions. I expect all students to show respect to others and themselves at all times. We have introduced the concept of being a bucket filler via the book “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McCloud. For additional information you can visit the website: www.bucketfillers.com

12. Weekly Reports Each Friday, a Friday Folder will be sent home with your child. The Weekly Report is stapled to the inside of the folder and will be a summary of your child’s week, any Homework Notices or Memos will be indicated on the Weekly Report. Students that have returned all homework and have no behavior issues for the week will receive 30 Beaver Bucks (15 for perfect homework and 15 for outstanding behavior). The folder will also have your child’s corrected work for the week. Please review this work with your child each Friday and sign the Weekly Report. *** Students who bring back their signed Weekly Report each Monday will be entered into a drawing for a special treat. 5

14. 6 Departmentalizing & Curriculum The fourth grade classes will be departmentalizing for Social Studies and Science. All fourth grade students will have: Miss Sims for Science, Mrs. Tice for Social Studies. The teachers listed above will give all grades for these subjects. All homework in those subjects will be turned in and accounted for by the teacher responsible.

15. Curriculum • Math-District Adopted Houghton Mifflin Text Books with Engage NY Common Core based curriculum. • ★Emphasis on timed tests (Goal: 50 problems in 3 minutes 90% Especially multiplication and division facts • Language Arts- State and District Standards, Houghton Mifflin text, and novels. • ★Emphasis on writing narratives, summaries, opinions and response to literature essays. • Critical Literacy • Current Events • Spelling • Pretest on Monday, homework practice on Tuesday, and final test on Friday.

16. Curriculum • Social Studies- District adopted Scott Foresman text • Mrs. Tice will be teaching and assessing the social studies curriculum to the entire 4th grade. • Science-District adopted text Foss • Miss Sims will teach and assess the science curriculum to the entire 4th grade class. • Monday-Music and PE • Tuesday Art • Wednesday PE • Friday Computer Lab

17. Grades • Homework scored for effort + (excellent)  (satisfactory) - (needs improvement) • Standards based Report Card 4=Advanced above grade level 3=Proficient at grade level 2=Approaching grade level 1=Below grade level

18. Common Core State Standards Overview of English Language Arts Fourth grade students read longer words and use roots, prefixes, and suffixes to determine the meanings of unknown words. They use details and examples in the text to determine the main idea and describe a character, setting, or event. Students produce writing that is developed, focused, organized, and edited. They group related ideas in paragraphs and sections, and provide a conclusion. Fourth grade students know when to use formal English, and when informal English is appropriate.

19. Common Core State Standards Overview of Mathematics Fourth graders use their knowledge of place value to generalize to 1,000,000 and learn to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place. They fluently add and subtract using the standard algorithm and multiply and divide with multi-digit numbers. Fourth graders extend understanding of fractions to include equivalence, ordering and simple decimal notation. Students measure angles and classify geometric shapes by lines (parallel, perpendicular, etc.) and angles (right, acute, obtuse, etc.).

20. 4th Grade Math--Engage NY Scope and Sequence Module 1: Place Value, Rounding and Algorithms for Addition & Subtraction (25 days) Module 2: Unit Conversions (7 days) Module 3: Multi-Digit Multiplication and Division (43 days) Module 4: Angle Measure and Plane Figures (20 days) Module 5: Fraction Equivalence, Ordering, and Operations (45 days) Module 6: Decimal Fractions (20 days) Module 7: Exploring Multiplication (20 days)

21. Mathematical Practices: • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Model with mathematics. • Use appropriate tools strategically. • Attend to precision. • Look for and make use of structure. • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

22. 7 Class Dues/Supplies/Fieldtrips Class Dues/Donations: As a fourth grade team we are asking for $40 for class donations. You can choose to pay each trimester ($20 the first, $10 the second and $10 the third) or pay all at once. Your $40 will cover: Fieldtrips/Guest Speakers $20 Fall Performance T-shirt $6 The remaining money will cover our weekly subscription to Scholastic News, materials and supplies for many other activities/supplies throughout the year. Supplies: Students need only the supplies listed on the supply list. It is preferred that they do not bring big notebooks (with zippers and Velcro), large pencil boxes, or other unnecessary items to school. The desks are very limited in space and there isn’t room for anything extra. Thank you for getting the supplies listed.

Class Donations/Fieldtrips/Supplies Field Trips: Gold Bug Mine—Placerville Folsom History Museum—Traveling Trunk Program Discovery Museum Sunrise Rollerland Fieldtrips are an important part of the curriculum and responsible behavior is expected. Please make sure to return all completed permission slips in a timely manner. Parent drivers are needed for transportation. Following the SJUSD fieldtrip policies all parent drivers and or chaperones must meet the following criteria: Have cleared fingerprints on file with SJUSD Have vehicle usage forms on file in the office as well as a copy of your driver’s license and proof of insurance. **Please remember that siblings are not allowed on school fieldtrips.
