The illegal organ trade - Sahara Russell (Black Screen Productions)
A bit of background… • Organ trade, which is known as the red market, is the trade of human organs, tissues or other body products, usually for transplantation. • Studies show that anywhere from 5% to 42% of transplanted organs are illicitly purchased. • Organ harvesting has become a booming business in the 21st century on a global scale. • Many illegally trafficked organs are harvested, by any means necessary, and are gladly received by the person willing to pay the highest price. • With an average of 3 people dying daily in the UK waiting for transplants due to the shortage of donated organs, there is clearly a high demand for supply and criminals behind black market organ trade are becoming increasingly aware of this.
• Cairo, in Egypt, is at the heart of this trade. • The organs are harvested from the poor, mainly migrants and refugees. • Often they receive a very small fee but usually they receive nothing at all. • “It’s a form of modern day slavery.” • People can be physically forced to giving their organs away. How does this affect our story… • We can use the idea of the man being attacked and forced to give his organ - Sanjana is researching attack/fight scenes • The idea of a PI going to find out who sold the girl the organ doesn’t really go anywhere - instead the young girl who received the organ is going to try and find the ‘donor’ • The doctor can be part of the deal as they usually get a sum of the money that the patient pays
