Political Movements Oxford Dictionary: A group of people working together to advance their shared political, social, or artistic ideas: the labour movement A campaign undertaken by a political, social, or artistic movement: a movement to declare war on poverty A change or development: the movement towards greater sexual equalitymovements in the underlying financial markets

Political Movements • Task: • Groups of 3 or 4 • Create placards for a protest for/against something you believe in, no matter how small it is. • Write a mission statement (your aim and how you attend to achieve it) • Explain your political movement to another person in the class • What is the central issue? • Why is it important to you? • What can/is/will be done to achieve your aim? • How can the other person get involved?

Political Movements • Charcteristics: • Tend to focus on one political issue • Participants do not have to be members • Rely on mass support • Focus on raising public awareness • Create public debate • Emerge quickly, when an issue arises • Die quickly, once issue is resolved • Next lesson we will be looking at the Refugee Movement
