Church and Kingdom in the Old Testament ~The Old Testament used the term “church” to describe the people of Israel 137 times! ~The Old Testament uses the term “Kingdom” 175 times, only 102 are used to describe the people of Israel. ~God called the children of Israel His church more often than He called it His kingdom ~In the Old Testament, the church and the Kingdom were the same things.
Prophecy Shows They are the Same Isaiah 2:1-3 -The mountain of the Lord’s house was to be established. -All nations would be a part of it. -It would originate in Jerusalem. -The word of God would come from Jerusalem and proceed to the entire world. Isaiah 9:6-7 -This speaks of the Messiah. -He would be given the “government”—the throne of David no less. -This kingdom would last forever.
Prophecy Shows They are the Same NT -Mt 16:18 -Jesus known as these -1 Timothy 3:15 -Mt 28:19-20 -Mark 9:1; Acts 1:8 -2 Peter 1:11 -Acts 8:4; 17:30 OT -Future kingdom -“Wonderful…” -Kingdom=house of God -All nations would be a part of it -Originate in Jerusalem -It would be everlasting -God’s word would originate and spread from there.
They Both Began at the Same Time Church -Matthew 16:18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. -Acts 2:47 And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. Kingdom -Mark 9:1 And He said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power.” -Colossians 1:13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love
They Both Have the Same Head Church Ephesians 5:23-24 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Kingdom -Acts 2:32-33 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.
They Both Have the Same Nature Church -Ephesians 2:19-22 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. Kingdom -John 18:36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here."
Jesus Used Both Terms Interchangeably -Matthew 16:18-19 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
