Academy schedule • Orient to Academy, profession, BMCW • Orient to social work fundamentals • Get introduced to case work in agencies • Learn and practice Safety Intervention concepts • Begin applying skills to casework in agencies Phase 1—week 1 Phase 2—weeks 2-5
Academy Phases, con’t • Integrate Safety Intervention concepts into case planning • Continue applying skills to casework in agencies • Expand casework in agencies with continued support and weekly group learning Phase 3--weeks 6-8 Phase 4—weeks 9-12
A word about evaluation… • Your skill will be evaluated at the end of phases 2,3, and 4 • Evaluations assess readiness to continue learning (Phases 2 and 3) or readiness to take an initial caseload (Phase 4) • Knowing you know builds confidence!

Public Child Welfare… • Acts on the community’s decision to ensure the safety, permanence and well-being of children • Safety ALWAYS comes first…ALWAYS • No permanence or well-being is possible if children are not safe
Public Child Welfare=Authority and responsibility • Community decisions established in law • U.S. Constitution • State law • Community decisions established in public policy • e.g., Children should be raised by family whenever possible • Governmental responsibility requires knowledge, skill, restraint
What is a professional? • Functions according to standards • Based in tested principles and methods • Safeguards fairness and equal treatment
What are the key standards you will follow? • National Association of Social Work (NASW) Code of Ethics • Wisconsin State Safety Intervention Standards • Includes Access, IA, Ongoing/Safety Services and Out-of-Home Care
