During the Ice Age, Native Americans followed animals from Asia to the New World • Ice sheets caused the level of the oceans to drop. • Bering Strait • Searching for food • Over thousands of years, groups moved south to the tip of South America • The Mayas, the Aztecs, and the Incas had highly advanced cultures
By 1492, there were hundreds of tribes in North America • Each tribe had a different name and different customs • Six major groups or culture areas • Far North • Eastern Woodlands • Plains • Southwest • California-Intermountain • Northwest Coast
Geographical features determined way of life • Far North – nomads due to short growing season • Eastern Woodland – farmers and hunters • Plains – nomads who followed buffalo • Southwest – farmers • California-Intermountain - hunter-gatherers • Northwest Coast – abundant resources, ruled by a few families chosen because of wealth and ancestry
