The Project Re-development of the lands of St. Brendan's Hospital, Grangegorman, Dublin 7for: Local and Community health facilities by Health Services Executive (HSE) for the people of Dublin North West Relocation of all elements of the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) to a single campus & Local community access & use

  6. Role of Higher Education Strategic Objective : “To achieve and maintain a position in tertiary education in the top quarter (10%) of OECD countries in terms of participation in tertiary education and in the quality of that education and training” Dept. of Ed & S.

Higher Ed External Drivers incl: • Movement towards mass education • Demands of a regulatory environment to be accountable for exchequer investment & achievement of stated goals • Increasingly, the role of the higher education sector in addressing and underpinning the economic, social and cultural life of society is leading to the need for greater transparency to assess success

National Development Plan 2007-2013 strategic goals • Widen participation & increase student and graduate numbers • Lifelong learning & upskilling • Access for disadvantaged and under-represented groups to be widened • Student retention rates to be improved • Promoting recruitment in science & technology programmes • Recruitment of international students • Stronger links with industry

DIT Access and Outreach • DIT Access Service • 374 disadvantaged students from across Ireland in DIT on a positive discrimination programme • Dublin Inner city Schools Computerisation (DISC) • IT facilities & teacher training in all inner city primary & secondary schools • Ballymun Music Programme • 700 children per year on programme • The Digital Community • computers centres and training located in 20 inner city flat complexes • Mature student access programme • Students learning with communities

Challenges: • To create a campus that will promote access and enhance opportunities for learning and engagement • To reach out to the city and to surrounding communities and build ownership & engagement with its resources • To develop robust design briefs that will allow some flexibility in the future • Targeting the built environment • Public realm - Infrastructure – technology

Need to provide for new ways of learning More collaborative, active learning with hands-on experiences Integrated, multidisciplinary Blended, learning takes place anywhere/anytime, mobile technology with social activity Immersive with simulated or real-world experiences Hybrid activities, online with face-to-face, mixed

There is a need to design spaces which intentionally support student-centred learning strategies • Understand the potential directions for future pedagogy • Need to consider the full range of spaces for learning • Students studying in formal and informal spaces • Designing all spaces are conducive to promoting learning for all students • Learning spaces should be rooted in an understanding of the ways in which students engage with the campus • Research indicates that there is a significant variation by class year in the manner in which students use space
