  1. 5/4 Day 2- Grab the FDR worksheet #8 and a text book.Work with a partner to complete it. Learning Target: I can explain what caused the Great Depression and evaluate the effectiveness of the Federal Government’s response. Homework: Review book worksheet Unit 4 due Tues, May 10th. Bring your review book with you tomorrow.

  2. 5/5 Day 3 Grab New Deal direction sheet #9, Finish pg8 w/ a partner, Using poster materials & text book create a poster explaining the three programs given with your group. Learning Target-I can explain what caused the Great Depression and evaluate the effectiveness of the Federal Government’s response. Homework: Finish FDR packet using ppt on website for 10pts.

  3. NEW DEAL POSTER: RB 199, Text 706 This poster is due at the end of the period. You and your group must have the following on the poster: • 1. Divide poster into three sections; • Relief, Recovery, & Reform • 2. Identify your three programs as a relief, recovery or reform and put them in the right section. Use your Text/Review book to find out. • 3. Name and describe the purposes of each of your three programs (make sure to give initials and full name). • 4. Be able to tell others whether it worked to fix some problems • 5. Give illustration for each program that describes its function • 6. Put group’s names on poster.

The Hundred Days- Federal gov’t becomes more involved than ever before in the economy. • Fireside Chats- FDR restores confidence in banking system, give hope to masses. • Regulating banksand Finance- Intended to encourage people to reinvest $ in banks. • Rural Assistance- pay farmer not to grow so prices increase help farmers get out of debt. • Work Projects- CCC, WPA, TVA- create jobs so people can consume again. • Promoting Fair Practice- promote recovery, by interrupting wage cuts, falling prices, and layoffs. • Food, Clothing and Shelter-provide people with $ to keep their homes and buy goods, maintain self respect. U.S. 1935 Declared the NRA (National Recovery Act) unconstitutional Why? • Congress does not have the right to regulate intrastate commerce, (commerce within a state) or pass that to the executive branch • Violated separation of powers by giving this power to the executive branch (Congress is supposed to regulate commerce) FDR AND THE SUPREME COURT, CONSTITUTION, AND CRITICS,

  9. AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Act) declared unconstitutional • Why? • Agriculture is a local, not interstate matter according to 10th Amendment- Feds can’t regulate. U.S. v. Butler 1936

  10. Provided jobs, flood control, cheap electricity for rural areas of 7 states • But some criticized it as being socialist TVA Tennessee Valley Authority

Also know as the “court packing”plan • New Deal legislation continues to get vetoed by Court so… • FDR wanted the number of Supreme Court justices to go from 9 – 15 if they refused to retire at age 70- Senate never approved of increase in number. • What does this threaten? • Separation of Powers and system of checks and balances The Judicial Reorganization Plan
