  2. Your heartbeat can be heard as a “Lub-dub” sound. The first heart sound (Lub) is caused by the mitral and tricuspid valves closing. The second heart sound (dub) is caused by the aortic and pulmonic valves closing.

  3. Heart Murmurs • Sounds like a swishing sound with the Lub dub sound. • Caused by a valve not closing tightly or a hole in the heart

  5. Cardiac Arrest • When circulation completely stops to the rest of the blood • There is no pulse because the heart is not pumping blood • A person becomes unconscious because oxygen is not delivered to the brain • Drug overdosing can cause someone to go into cardiac arrest

  6. Heart Attacks • This is different than cardiac arrest • A heart attack occurs when a blood vessel becomes blocked and interrupts blood flow to the heart, causing heart muscle to die. • a fatty material called plaque (plak) builds up over many years on the inside walls of the coronary arteries

  9. Coronary Artery Disease • Disease that causes clogged arteries. • Symptoms: Chest pain and heart attacks

  10. Cardiovascular disease • A number of diseases that affect the heart or blood vessels. These include diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

  11. Congestive Heart Failure • A condition that can result from any structural or functional cardiac disorder that impairs the ability of the heart to fill with or pump a sufficient amount of blood throughout the body. • Leads to the heart and body's failure.

  12. Heart Bypass Surgery is used to treat patients with chest pain and prevent heart attacks. In this procedure, part of a blood vessel from another part of the body is stitched in to “bypass” the clogged artery and take blood to the heart.
