  8. Industrial Revolution • 1750s – 1850s(ish…) • Movement from hand production to machine production • Began with better/more efficient farming practice • Resulted in new inventions to help production, transportation, etc. • Began in England– but why???

  9. Agricultural Advances • Farming improvements allow industrialization • Enclosure movement • Common land purchased and fenced • Two options for poor farmers: become tenant farmers OR move to cities • Wealthy farmers experiment with new ideas

Industrialization effects • Factories gather around water and coal • Urbanization • Populations boom • Problems • Crowded, noisy, dangerous, crime-filled • Deadly diseases spread • But wealthy merchants had it nice • Working conditions • Average work day = 14 hours • Children given dangerous jobs • Explosions, coal dust, gears, intense stress

Preindustrial vs. industrial times Industrial (1700s-1900) • Lived in cities • Worked in factories • Needed money to buy goods and food • Factory system: made goods in factories Pre-Industrial (1700s) • Lived in small villages • Worked as farmers • Grew or made what their family needed • Domestic system: made goods at home

Social tensions grow • Middle class: growing in wealth and influence • Upper class: richest, owners • Conservative: protect profit and authority • Middle class: managers, lawyers • Moderate: want success but don’t have power • Lower: skilled workers and managers • Wanted reform: better wages, shorter days, safer jobs
