Look at this word and listen to me read it out loud. As I read, decide how many syllables you hear and where the word should be divided. Notice that sometimes a root or root word may have two or more suffixes added to it. Also, notice that the inflected endings –edand –ingcan be combined with suffixes. Each inflection and suffix forms its own syllable when pronouncing a word.
Look at the words below. With your partner, identify the suffix and/or inflected ending in each word. Then break the rest of the word into parts and use these parts to read the word cheer ful ly end less ly mean ing fully fright en ingly
Independent Practice Look through your social studies book for words that have suffix combinations. Find at least 5 words that have some combination of suffixes and/or suffixes and inflected endings. Write these words in your journal. Circle each suffix, underline any inflected ending, put a box around the root word and then read the words aloud.
