Polymers • Long chainlike molecules composed of repeating units • Individual repeating units are called monomers. • Examples include PVC tubing, Styrofoam, nylon rope, and Plexiglas windows
Polymer examples • Polyethylene – the plastic that composes milk jugs, juice containers, and garbage bags • Additional polymer – a polymer in which the monomers simply link together without eliminating any atoms • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) – is a substituted polyethylene plastic used to make pipes and plumbing fixtures • Composed of monomers in which a chlorine atom as been substituted for one of the H atoms
Copolymers – consist of two different kinds of monomers • Nylon 6,6 are composed of hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid
Polymers continued • Condensation polymers – polymers that eliminate an atom or a small group of atoms during polymerization • Dimer – the product that forms between the reaction of two monomers
You should be able to… • Classify structural and condensed formulas as alkane, alkene, or alkyne and saturated or unsaturated. • Draw isomers of an alkane. • Recognize functional groups from structures. • Name alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and alcohols. • Polymers • Polymer reactions (for example condensation polymers and addition polymers do what?)
