Constant Invasions in Western Europe caused… • Disruption of Trade • Downfall of cities • Population shifts: nobles retreated to rural areas and cities were left without strong leadership… others followed and the population became more rural
German-speaking people + Roman population = mixed culture • Decline of learning • Latin changes and other languages (French/Spanish/etc) evolve • Kingdoms change, but Church provides stability and security
Concept of Government Changes • In Germany, family ties and personal loyalty determined who you would follow in battle • Whereas in Rome… there was loyalty to public government and written law • Which way do you prefer?
German’s Adopt Christianity • Starting with… Clovis. His story: • His wife Clothilde had encouraged him to convert, but it was not until he was entering battle that he appealed to the Christian God “For I have called on my gods, but I find they are far from my air… Now I call on Thee.” • After they won Clovis and 3,000 of his warriors were baptized
Politics are: • Frankish rulers and missionaries helped spread Christianity • Monasteries: religious communities where men called MONKS gave up their stuff and devoted their lives to serving God. • Women who followed this way of life were called nuns and lived in convents
Gregory I “Gregory the Great” • 590 CE • Pope of the Church in Rome • Expands role of pope • Pope goes beyond spiritual power… to secular (worldly) power • Pope becomes center of Roman government
Rise of the Franks • When Roman Empire falls apart… small kingdoms pop up throughout Europe • Under Clovis, and then Charles Martel, Franks expand • “Charles the Hammer,” Mayor (not King) of the Palace • Defeated Muslim raiders from Spain, making him a Christian hero
Charlemagne Becomes Emperor • Grandson of Charles Martel • Nickname “Charles the Great” • Nearly doubled the size of the empire • Pope crowns Charlemagne emperor… this signals alliance of Germans, Church, and heritage of the Roman Empire
But beyond building the Empire… • Charlemagne encourages learning! • Surrounds himself with scholars • Opens palace school • Orders monasteries to open schools
