  3. FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM • Shahadah • Salah • Zakah • Sawm • Hajj

  4. MOSQUE • Means “place of congregation” • Mosques usually do not have chairs • Focal point of is the Mihrab • Friday midday prayers is the common time to attend the Mosque

  5. IMAM • Allah founded Islam, and Muhammad is his prophet • After the prophet dies, succeeded by certain leaders called Khalifahs(Caliphs) • Imams lead the prayers in the mosque

  6. FESTIVALS • HAJJ -- pilgrimmage • Kabah in Makkah, Saudi Arabia • ID-UL-ADHA “feast of sacrifice”

  7. RITES OF PASSAGE • ADHAN-CALL TO PRAYER • Child bathed shortly after birth and then the father or close male relative will perform the Adhan. • Declaration of the Unity of Allah and Muhammad.

  10. Artifacts and Rituals • Wudu- ritual washing • Salah begins with a statement and then washing of certain body parts and then declaration of faith is made, the Shahadah. • Some Muslims use prayer beads
