Washington • Founded the Tuskegee Institute of AL • Believed African Americans should be patient in order to make progress in society • W.E.B. Du Bois • One of key founders of NAACP • Believed African Americans should fight actively for change

  3. Government jobs • Woodrow Wilson segregates government jobs • George Washington Carver • Made advances with crop rotation • Developed many uses for peanuts • Madame C.J. Walker • Created hair care products for African American women • First American woman to become a millionaire

  4. Mexican Americans • Created their own neighborhoods called barrios • Formed mutualistas to help each other • Mutualistas  pool money together for insurance, legal aid, and health needs

  5. Asian Americans • Immigrants from Korea, Japan, and the Philippines took low paying jobs in West • In CA, Japanese were banned from owning land and having the same economic opportunities as whites • San Francisco requires Asian Americans to attend separate schools • Gentlemen’s Agreement with Japan

  6. Native Americans • Many NA lost their land promised to them by the government (U.S.) • Society of American Indians • Worked for social justice and to educate white Americans about the NA culture • Also felt that NA should adjust to the white culture
