Who is Martha? • Grew up in Pierce City, Mo. • Graduated from Mizzou in 1934 with a degree in economics • Earned her law degree from the University of Michigan • Griffiths experienced sex discrimination in her legal career, so she and her husband practiced law in their own firm, Griffiths & Griffiths. • Served in the Michigan State House from 1948 – 1952 • Elected to Congress in 1954 where she served 10 terms • First female elected Lt. Gov. of the state of Michigan; elected at the age of 70
Political Trailblazer • Griffiths was a tireless and effective advocate for women’s rights • Her crowning legislative achievements were her successful advocacy for the inclusion of women in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and • the passage by Congress of the Equal Rights • Amendment (ERA). • Worked to secure the passage of Title IX, a law that protects against sex discrimination in education
Our Mission To be a catalyst for connectionsamong diverse and distinguished MU collegian leaders and alumnae. Through lifelong learning, mentoring and leadership development, members stimulate their potential and that of other MU women while supporting the best interests of Mizzou.
Our Purpose • Create networking and leadership opportunities • Promote excellence and learning through mentoring relationships • Promote personal and professional achievement
Our Leadership • Alumnae and student members may serve on the Executive Committee. • Each position is a one-year commitment. • The first year you will serve as a vice-chair and then move to a chair position. • Committees include: • -- Programming, Awards, Special Activities Communication, Student Membership & Alumnae Membership
Who We Are as Members … • Diverse professional career paths in science, engineering, business, liberal arts and more • Geographically diverse • Varied talents, expertise and interests
Current Membership • 118 Student Members • 131 Alumnae Members • 249 Total Members
Student Membership • Upper-Class Undergraduate Women • Graduate & Professional Students • One-year terms, renewable until graduation based on participation • Paired with an alumnae member who serves as a mentor • Application Process –due annually in the spring • Must be a True Tiger • Suggest Griffiths to a friend!
Alumnae Membership • Women are nominated for membership • Invitations are sent over the summer • Must be MAA member • Paired as a mentor to a collegian member
Past Members (EDNA) • Membership category for past members • Receive communication on Griffiths events and programs • Attend conferences (fees apply to attend conferences ) • No mentoring role
What Does Being a Member Mean? • Attend conferences to learn and contribute • Get to know your mentor or mentee • Network and connect with our diverse members • Organize or participate in a regional gathering
