Assessment Plan Background Why do we have an assessment program? • It is required • For secure and ethical large-scale assessment administration • Maintain valid results • Maintain community trust • Creates multiple data sources to evaluate effectiveness of instruction • To improve the quality of instruction and student learning

Students Teachers Parents Schools Program Coordinators District • Awareness of their skills in a variety of areas • Individual students’ strengths and weaknesses • Evaluate the effectiveness of their instruction • Summative data regarding their child’s achievement • Progress reported to them by their child’s teacher • Monitor academic progress of students • Focus initiatives/resources • Evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs • Monitor student progress • Curriculum revision/implementation • Focus initiatives/resources

  4. Assessment Plan Background How was the plan developed? • Assessment Committee • Comprised of 25 teachers, counselors, principals, and other administrators • Suggested changes gathered from colleagues • Separated into grade span subcommittees

  6. Assessment Plan Background How was the plan developed? • Recommendations presented to Academic Services, Principals, and Cabinet • All recommendations from the committee were approved for inclusion in the proposed 2012-2013 Assessment Plan

  8. Changes for 2012-2013 • The 6+1 writing assessment switched to a portfolio model • Principals will continue to discuss if the middle school common assessments will be part of the student grade • Addition of DIBELS for progress monitoring • More assessment to monitor ELL student progress

Committee Concerns 2012-2013 • Online and Technological Challenges • As assessment becomes increasingly delivered through online processes, availability of technology (e.g., number of computers, band-width, and battery life) is a concern • Progress Monitoring Lacking • We will be adding DIBELS to support this concern • Minimal K-2 Assessments and/or Data • STAR and Terra Nova are our only district-wide assessments at this level currently.

Assessment Plan Summary • Meeting the needs of our students and educators • Meeting the needs of data gathering for value-added, growth, and achievement summaries better but still with room to grow • Smarter Balanced Assessments (Common Core) will be focus of planning in 2012-2013 for 2014-2015 full implementation
