  1. Honors Assessment 2012-2013 The LCPS English Honors curriculum now requires two portfolio assessments during the second semester.  These assessments will constitute a portion of the student's final exam grade.

  2. The First Portfolio Your first portfolio is a reflection on your progress as writers. This will be completed at the end of the third quarter and it will count as 25% of the final exam grade. For this portfolio you may choose from any of your writings from the first three quarters. You will need to gather at least THREE of these writings that show your progress as a writer. You will then use these three pieces to write a TWO page reflection on your progress.

  3. The Second Portfolio Your second portfolio will be a reflection upon a larger question (your Big Question). This reflection will be written at the end of the year and it will count as 25% of the final exam grade.

  4. Portfolio #2 cont For your final portfolio you will need to have materials gathered about your Big Question (BQ). You will have most of the first quarter to decide upon a BQ so don’t feel stressed to come up with one by next class. These Big Questions will be, by definition, difficult to answer, or answerable in a number of ways.

  5. Portfolio #2 cont. After choosing or creating a BQ, you will reflect on this question throughout the entire year. We will offer you multiple opportunities throughout the year to connect the work from class to your individual BQ. You will also have to gather material on your own from a variety of sources. You will include these documents in your portfolio. At the end of the year, you will reflect on your BQ.

  6. Coming up with a Big Question

  7. Your BQ should focus on larger thematic ideas. Your BQ should have, at its core, a philosophy, idea, or even an emotion that you can explore. Examples: Is it patriotic to protest one’s government? (philosophy) What makes a true hero (idea) Is it important to show others that you care? (emotion)

  8. Your BQ should invite sub-questions that relate to it. For example: Are we all alone? How can we try not to feel like we are alone? Why do people feel alone? What consequences come from the impression that we are all alone? How do people try to escape the feeling that they are alone?

  9. Your BQ should be arguable. “Arguable” in this context just means that the questions are too large to have a correct answer. If asked, you should be able to provide at least two answers to your BQ.

  10. Finally, your BQ should be broad enough to apply to more than one work studied. For example: Questions related to slavery might work great for the first semester but the topic of racism would work better for the entire year.
