2008 - 2009 CMC Activities Overview • Monthly Telecom CMC Board of Directors Meetings, minutes recorded by Dr. David Evans, Secretary/ Treasurer and then transitioned to our new Secretary/ Treasurer, Terri Morse! • ASEE allocated CMC budget used for Member and Engineering Education Collaboration Awards, departing BoD recognition, speaker recognition. • Focus on increasing CMC membership has had a huge impact! • Leadership Symposia w/Chairs of Special Interest Groups (SIG’s) Reporting on Commitments to 2009 used different format this year • CMC Ex-Officio Director (Joe O’Brien) Serves as VP Finance to ASEE Board – Congrats to newly elected VP Finance, CMC Board Member, Dr. Ray Haynes! • Continued Emphasis to the Institutional Councils and ASEE Board of Directors for I. Davis Collaboration Award – we’re almost to the goal! • SIG for K-12 Educational Pipeline and Future Workforce very actively networking within/ outside of ASEE
2008 - 2009 CMC – Overview cont’d • SIG for Diversity Issues in Engineering Education Focused on Increasing Society Membership to ASEE and special committee formed by ASEE President • SIG on Industry/University Collaboration for Engr. Research & Intellectual Property had leadership transition with new members • SIG for the National Collaborative Task Force to Support the Establishment of Reform for Graduate Engineering Education Continues Effort w/Universities • Proudly supported the CIP Division Activities at the 2009 CIEC Conference in Orlando, FL • Supported the CIP Division Activities at the 2008 ASEE Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, PA • Presented the CMC “Excellence in Engineering Education Collaboration Award” at 2009 CIEC
2008 - 2009 CMC – Overview cont’d • CMC Members and its Partners submitted Abstracts for 2009 ASEE Annual Conference • CMC Companies were Major Financial Sponsors of 2008 CIEC Conference, Orlando, FL • CMC Companies were major sponsors and participants in the 2009 EDI in Boston, MA • PIC V Chair transitioned from Ex-Officio CMC Director (Dr. David Quick) to new PIC V Chair (Pat Hall); actively engaged in promoting collaboration between CMC and CIP, CPD • CPD Chair (Julayne Moser, Lynda Coulson) active participants in monthly CMC agenda • Joe Tidwell, as CIP Chair and Ex-Officio CMC Director, instrumental in keeping CMC connected to CIEC, CIP activities. New CIP Chair Dr. Linda Krute has picked up the baton!
2008 - 2009 CMC - SIG Activities • SIG for the National Collaborative on Graduate Education Reform (Dr. Don Keating) • Continuing to make steady progress • Expanding the list of alliance colleges/ universities • Presenting four invited papers for the 2009 ASEE Session 1455, co-sponsored by CMC and GSD • SIG for Engineering, Technology & Society Liaison (Prof. Pat Fox) • Served as liaison between EDC, ETC and Professional Societies for CMC, working to increase mutual partnerships, programs and activities • Engaged with EDC, ERC, CIP to develop the details for the newly approved Isadore Davis Award (a joint Council national collaboration!)
2008 - 2009 CMC – SIG Activities • SIG for Diversity Issues in Engineering Education (Dr. Ray Haynes) • Several diversity organizations have joined CMC as members – now include WEPAN, HENAAC, SHPE, NOGLSTP, AISES, NAMEPA, MENTORNET, SWE, NSBE. • SIG very prominent at 2009 NAMEPA 30th Anniversary conference in LA with many members of CMC as active participants/sponsors of the event. • SIG participating with newly "stood up" ASEE Diversity Council under the leadership of BevLee Watford from Virginia Tech. This was one of several initiatives begun by President Rajala during her term. • DuPont and ASEE providing exhibit space and complimentary registrations for diversity organizations at 2009 Conference in Austin. • HENAAC has placed an order for 15-20K copies of Engineering Go For It to be used in their various K-12 activities.
2008 - 2009 CMC – SIG Activities • SIG for Diversity Issues in Engineering Education (Dr. Ray Haynes) – cont’d • CMC/SIG members working with the Tribal Colleges via the NSF-funded project, All Nations Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (ANLSAMP) to get more STEM students from Indian Country to matriculate to college careers. • CMC/SIG members instrumental in "standing up" Minority On Line Information Service's (MOLIS) "Communiversity" to better utilize the minority institution schools in actively participating with industry on government contracts. http://www.molis.us • CMC/SIG members working with the Tribal Colleges via the NSF-funded project, All Nations Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (ANLSAMP) to get more STEM students from Indian Country to matriculate to college careers.
2008 - 2009 CMC – SIG Activities • SIG on Industry/University Collaboration for Engineering Research & Intellectual Property (Dennis Fortner) • New team organized with background in Industry/University Relations conducting Sponsored Research and Licensing representing (NGC/IBM/Boeing) • Team has begun to look at successful relationship models, implementation of equitable Terms Discussions and Master Agreements • Issues that impede the development of such agreements • Sources of support or unproven concepts Action: Team encourages new member participation and ideas/issues which may be of interest to the full committee
2008 - 2009 CMC – SIG Activities • SIG for K-12 Educational Pipeline & Future Workforce (Richard Blais) • Disseminated the guidelines for K-12 STEM education entitled “Engineering Activities are for All Americans”, which are focused on: • Engineering Design • Connecting engineering to Science, Technology and Mathematics • Nature of Engineering • Communication and Teamwork • Engineering and Society • Disseminated the Criteria and Rubric for Assessing Curricula Based STEM Programs • Published the Criteria and Rubric for Assessing Extra-curricula Based STEM Programs
2008 - 2009 CMC – SIG/Committee Activities • SIG for International Engineering Education (Alan Jacobs) • Established in June, 2008 • Developed mission statement and list of proposed initiatives. Decision to focus on developing and presenting an assessment of the skills and experiences required by engineering graduates to work effectively in a global environment. • Drafted “Attributes of a global engineer” for review and comment by the CMC. • CMC Sponsored Session - Global Environment--Required Skills & Experiences – to be held during 2009 ASEE National Conference. • Membership Committee • Recruit, retain and diversify CMC membership • CMC membership currently has a record number of member companies! • Thanks to Dwight Wardell for his ongoing support!
2008 - 2009 CMC – Committee Activities • Awards Committee (Pete Janzow) • Highest award presented by the CMC • Recognizes CMC member companies who demonstrate outstanding collaboration with colleges, universities and K12 programs to impact engineering education and heighten the interest of young people in engineering. • Congratulations to the 2008-2009 Award Winners: • ACETS, Inc., "Engineering Activities for All Americans" • Freescale Semiconductor, "Freescale University Programs" • The MathWorks, "The EcoCAR Challenge" • National Instruments, "National Instruments Academic Program" • Tau Beta Pi Association, "Tau Beta Pi Fellowship Program - 75 Years!"
2008 - 2009 CMC – Committee Activities • Nominations Committee (Diane Matt) • Five nominations for new Directors collected • Four Board positions open • E-Ballot forwarded to members • Results of vote to be reported at ASEE Annual Conference • CMC Archives & Web Site (Mark Stratton) • Collecting and publishing CMC history • Updating Handbook with Revisions • Special Interest Groups listing and pilot web page for K-12 • Educational Pipeline, Future Workforce SIG
2008 - 2009 CMC – Committee Activities • Program Committee (Diane Matt) Industry Day Sessions • Tuesday, June 16, 2009 • Focused on current challenges in engineering education • Invited CMC Special Interest Group Chairs to discuss the most pressing issues in their interest area • Sessions developed from suggestions by the CMC Board and others • Emphasis: perspectives from industry and higher education, each session is structured to generate next steps for future action • Continuing the inclusive approach for June 16, 2009 CMC /EDC / Engineering Technology Deans Dinner: • 2707: CMC/EDC/Engineering Technology Reception (Ticketed) 6:30-8:00 p.m. • 2907: CMC/EDC/Engineering Technology Deans Dinner (Invitation Only) 7:30-9:00 p.m.
