  2. Syllable Stress • One syllable in each word is stressed more than the other syllable • A stressed syllable has a longer, louder, and higher sound • Ex. Invited … In-VIT-ed …

Rule Number 1… • Two-syllable words that can be both an adjective/noun or verb; the adjective/noun is stressed on the first syllable and the verb is stressed on second syllable • Examples: • PREsent (adjective) Everyone in our class is present today. • PREsent (noun) She gave her friend a lovely present. • preSENT (verb) The teachers presented their teachers with a birthday card.

  4. Rule Number 2… • Prefixes and suffixes are usually not stressed • Examples: • walk + ing = WALKing • un + clear = unCLEAR • im + possible = imPOSSible

  5. Rule Number 3… • Words with some suffixes are usually stressed on the syllable just before the suffix. • Suffixes include: -tion -cian -sion -ic -graphy -ity -ical -ify -ogy

  6. Rule Number 3 (con’t)…Words with some suffixes are usually stressed on the syllable just before the suffix. • Examples: • -tion exAM examinAtion • -cian TECHnical techNIcian • -ic eLECtric • -ity elecTRICity • -ical geoLOGical • -ogy geOLogy • -graphy geOgraphy
