By the end of the block… • We will perform an apparatus routine, containing our strongest skills, with control and fluency.
Today we will learn... • What skills and techniques are. • How to tell easy and complex skills apart. • What subroutines are and how we can use them to describe a skill.
What is a skill? • A skill describes the purpose of linked sequences of movement. • An example of a skill is shooting in basketball.
What is a technique? • A technique describes the way a skill is performed. • Examples of shooting techniques in basketball are lay-up, set shot, jump shot and slam dunk.
Look at the following skills and decide whether you think they are easy or complex... FORWARD ROLL
Easy or complex? OVERHEAD KICK
Easy or complex? Snowboard Backflip
Easy or complex? Rugby Pass
Easy or complex? Table Tennis Serve
Easy or complex? Volleyball Spike
Closed /Open/ Continuous Skills • Closed Skills are performed the same way every time. • Open Skills change dependant on the actions of an opponent. • Discreet are skills which have a definitive start and end point. • Continuous skills have no clear start and end point.
What are subroutines? • Subroutines are the small parts (movements) that make up a skill.
Homework • Break a forward roll down into as many subroutines as possible...
Break a forward roll down into as many subroutines as possible... • Stand feet together and hands above head. • Bend knees. • Place hands flat on the ground. • Tuck head in. • Push off from feet. • Roll on your back keeping feet together. • Reach forward to stand upright. • Raise hands above head to finish.
By the end of the block… • We will perform an apparatus routine, containing our strongest skills, with control and fluency. • Before we put together our routine what will we have to do?

Homework • Homework is due for Tuesday 26th August. • Choose a skill from gymnastics and give two techniques for performing the skill. • Are the techniques easy or complex? Give reasons for your answer. • Describe how you gathered data on your gymnastic performance. • List two strengths and two weaknesses you found.
