Mexico claimed the Nueces River as the border between TX & Mexico. The U.S. claimed that the Rio Grande was the border.
President James K. Polk sent troops into Texas to protect the new state.
Zachary Taylor (12) General Zachary Taylor set up the U.S. troops right along the Rio Grande. The Mexican Troops were set up on the other side. Mexican army demanded Taylor & the troops move back to the Nueces River. Taylor refused & Mexican troops attacked.
Taylor sends word to Washington that the fighting has started. • Congress declares war on Mexico.
Many hear of the war with Mexico. • Over 6,000 Texans join. • Even the Governor of Texas enlist in the army. • Texans want to fight Santa Anna Governor 52 yr. old
Juan Seguin • Chased out of Texas. • (People said he was loyal to Mexico) NOT TRUE. • Runs to Mexico. • Told to fight or go to jail. • Fights for Mexico during the war. "A victim to the wickedness of a few men... a foreigner in my native land; could I be expected to endure their outrages and insults?" he wrote in 1858. "I sought for shelter amongst those against whom I fought; I separated from my country, parents, family, relatives and friends, and what was more, from the institutions, on behalf which I had drawn my sword, with an earnest wish to see Texas free and happy."
September 14, 1847 fighting ends when the U.S. raise their flag over the National Palace in Mexico City.

Some people West of the Rio Grande & East of Santa Fe were unhappy being a part of TX because it was a slave state. U.S. senator Henry Clay resolves conflict; the compromise = U.S. gov’t would give TX $10 million for the territory. TX was in debt & needed the money so they agreed. Compromise of 1850
