Social- Cognitive Perspective • 1. Different people choose different environments. • Sally wants to go to Harvard • Ben wants to go to see LMFAO • Paula wants to go to hang out at the mall Each of these decisions, shapes who you are.
Social-Cognitive Perspective 2. Our personalities shape how we interpret and react to events. • Anxious vs. secure • Optimistic vs. Pessimistic
Social-Cognitive Perspective • Our personalities help create situations to which we react. • Class is rowdy • Butter up parents **Behavior is an interplay between external and internal influences
How would you handle: • Getting a “C” on an AP Psych test? • Finding out you get to go to the Grammys? • Finding out your parents were adopting a baby from another country?
Criticisms of the Social-Cognitive Perspective • Fails to take into account individuals inner traits, emotions,& unconscious motives. • Could Personality all really be determined by your interactions with society???
Exploring your SELF • “Imagine we’re all Psychology professors.” • Possible Selves- visions of all of the possible selves you dream of becoming. • Can change depending on situation. • Can help you achieve or bring you down.
Perceiving your SELF • Attributions: • Internal- blaming the person • External- blaming the situations • Fundamental Attribution Error- • we have a tendency to blame others for their faults, and ignore the situation. • Self-Serving Bias- • we tend to take credit for our successes, and believe we caused them to happen. • We often seek out self enhancing info!
Attributions • Why did I do well on the term paper? • Why did you get in a car accident? • Why did she get fired? • Why is he a successful singer? Give an example for each.
Self Esteem • Feelings of self worth. • Does high self esteem cause you to be successful or does being successful cause you to have high self-esteem? • Low- likely to disparage others • Defensive self-esteem- contingent on external evaluations. “I feel good because I look good.” • Secure self-esteem- more contingent on internal evaluations. Who we are. “I feel good because I know I am a good person.”
